Not that I can think of a specific case, (maybe a version of the Sims?) but would you allow a native Linux binary (elf format even) game that just used the Wine library? I'm asking because I think, boneheaded API aside, that they are native.

I haven't thought too deeply about this. Mostly I just have a prejudice against WineX. :)

Seriously, I suppose the case you suggest (a native Linux binary that's linked to an API emulation library) should be allowed. The deciding factor might be where the executable was intended to be run by those who produced it.

I don't think Maelstrom is very free. Its license says:
"The artwork and sounds used by Maelstrom are copyright Ambrosia Software
(http://www.ambrosiasw.com) and may not be redistributed separately from
the Maelstrom public GPL release."
(from .deb version 1.4.3-L3.0.5-3)

the contest is too mixed, there are games in wrong catedories... like fozen bubble in ¿strategy?... or some games that are 3d action are in the 3d action category and in the arcade category... i think that the contest MUST be restarted, or discarded, also i think that will be "fair" to put a "FREE game best graphics" and "free game music/sound"
also xmame is listed in the arcade category... is mame a game? i dont think so, bobz said that kohan will not enter strategy genre cause it uses an emulation layer, and what about mame... mame is an emulator such as wine, it will be the same nominating winex in all categories, cause it can run all kinds of games...

better think on restarting the contest...

Recall that it is legal for games to appear (and win) in more than one category. It is possible for an arcade game to have a strategic element. Someone obviously thought so about Frozen Bubble. Disagree? Don't vote for it.

Don't hold your breath....

We went back and forth on this and finally decided that good art is good art, regardless of its license. I do understand the arguments for splitting these categories, and perhaps we'll do it differently next year. Remember, we're making this up as we go along.

XMAME has been removed from the Arcade category. It really didn't belong there.

I don't recall saying /anything/ about Kohan, /ever/. :) There are two versions of Kohan in the world, remember. There's the native Loki port and the WineX Transgaming version. The Kohan competing here is the former. I'll go make sure that distinction is clear in the polls.

XMAME (and WineX, which didn't get nominated) belongs in the Emulators category only, and that is where it is.

See my earlier reaction to this idea. Really, von carstein, you should have been around during the Nomination period....
