BEST FREE SINGLE PLAYER STRATEGY GAME

Vote here for the nominee that you feel is the best free Strategy game. You must be registered and logged on to vote. Registration is free, instantaneous, and there are no ugly strings attached. We require registration to reduce the possibility of abuse of the polls. We're not going to spam you or sell your information to anyone. Honest.

The nominees are:

  • Advanced Strategic Command - A free turn-based multiplayer strategy game in the tradition of the Battle Isle series from Bluebyte.

  • Bots 'n' Scouts - Program a robot to move around a factory and pick up flags

  • Crack Attack - A OpenGL action/puzzle game in which you rush to eliminate colored blocks before they fill your screen. Particularly clever eliminations cause garbage to clutter your opponent's screen.

  • Freeciv - Turn-based strategy in which
each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal: To become the greatest civilization.

  • FreeCraft - Begun as an engine to play WarCraft II, it is now a complete free game when using the Freecraft Media Project.

  • Frozen Bubble - This polished arcade game has great graphics, great music, great gameplay, and it's all done in Perl.

  • Gnocatan - A wonderfully addicting game based on the 1995 German Game of the Year Settlers of Catan.

  • Tenes Empanadas Graciela - Conquer all the countries in the world. The rules are very similar to those of Risk, with some differences.

  • Xconq - A very flexible strategy game with lots of scenarios and options.

The following nominations were not valid:

  • LGeneral - This game engine is free, but the datafiles it requires are not, so the nomination has been moved to the Non-Free Strategy category.
  • PySol - PySol is a large collection of card games, and as such, does not belong here. It is nominated in the Free Cards/Board/Gambling category.
  • Simutrans - Not released under an OSI-approved license. Moved to the Non-Free Strategy category.

Remember, everybody, this is for single player. If it's not fun to play against the AI, don't vote for it here. Freeciv has 40% of the vote right now, but since no released version has AI diplomacy, it's not very fun to play against the computer. Furthermore, Crack Attack and Puzzle Bobble are not strategy games.

Are people who voted for FreeCiv really play it in single player? I doubt it.

FreeCiv doesnt have single player afaik. It just has bots on the server, and the client can automatically start the server. FreeCiv should be invalidated, and removed from this catigory, as well as Crack Attack and Puzzle Bobble, since they arnt strategy games, they are arcade games.

Oops, I meant Frozen Bubble in my previous post. I don't think Bots and Scouts is really a strategy game either

I only ever play FreeCiv single player. Sure, you're playing against bots, but that's true of most single player strategy games. FreeCiv only differs in being very up front about it. FreeCiv is as qualified to be up there as any other strategy title. (Not to imply that Frozen Bubble or Crack attack are strategy. That's clearly a mistake of some sort.)

I agree that Freeciv does count as a single-player strategy game- but I can't understand why anyone would vote for it as a single-player game. It's simply not fun in single-player, largely due to the lack of AI diplomacy. They're working on fixing that, but as things are now, only a complete freeciv fanatic would vote for it here.

Guess I'm one of those then, as I voted for FreeCiv.
