MOST PROMISING LINUX GAME PROJECT

Vote here for the nominee that you feel is the most promising Linux game project. You must be registered and logged on to vote. Registration is free, instantaneous, and there are no ugly strings attached. We require registration to reduce the possibility of abuse of the polls. We're not going to spam you or sell your information to anyone. Honest.

The nominees are:

  • Adonthell - A 2D graphical roleplaying game that is still under development but includes a wonderful complete "test" adventure called Waste's Edge.

  • Alcatraz - The game is a unique mixture of adventure-, logical-, and action games. The special features will be: varied gameflow, advanced graphic engine, realistic sound effects, interesting tasks and locations.

  • Arkhart - A multiplayer roleplaying game in an original world called Arkhart. This project is in the early stages, and most docuementation is only available in French.

  • Cannon Smash - A single or multiplayer 3D table tennis simulation.

  • Cube - A first-person shooter featuring in-game map editing, single and multi-player modes, dynamic lights, shadows, particles and physics.

  • Dominions 2 - The sequel to illwinter Game Design's turn-based strategy game where you take the role of a god.

  • Doom 3 - Doom. Pretty, pretty graphics.

  • Egoboo - A 3d graphical dungeon crawling adventure in the spirit of NetHack with beautiful OpenGL graphics.

  • Epiar - Space adventure and combat in a universe ruled by anarchy.

  • Freeciv - Turn-based strategy in which each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal: To become the greatest civilization.

  • GGZ - The GGZ Gaming Zone is a way for people to play a variety of games across the Internet with both human and computer opponents.

  • Neverwinter Nights - A single- or multi-player fantasy role-playing game that gives users the ability to create their own scenarios. Linux release promised "shortly after" the June 2002 Windows release.

  • Pachi el Marciano - A 2d run and jump platform game with great graphics

  • Parsec - Parsec will be a networked multiplayer space combat simulation, with all servers linked to a central server to comprise a large "galaxy".

  • Pingus - Guide the cute but dumb little penguins to saftey. This project is years old and promises greatness when it is complete.

  • PlaneShift - PlaneShift is a persistent fantasy multiplayer Role Playing Game with state-of-the-art 3D graphics, built with the Crystal Space engine.

  • Racer - A free-as-in-beer race car simulator with great graphics and a realistic physics model.

  • Retrun to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - A squad-based add-on for Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Note that there is not yet any confirmation that a Linux version is planned.

  • ScummVM - ScummVM allows you to play a number of old LucasArts adventure games, including Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, Sam & Max and more. Some games are not yet supported, but support is planned.

  • Super Tux - Help Tux save his girlfriend in this Super Maio Bros. style run & jump platform game.

  • The Ur-Quan Masters - A port to Linux of the 3DO version of the classic game StarControl 2.

  • Timewarp - A fan created project that intends to create a science fiction warexploration game based on the Star Control Universe. It urrently sports a fully functional, 8-player melee engine with all the ships from Star Control 2, a few from Star Control 3 and a slew of wholly original creations.

  • TORCS - 3D auto racing.

  • Trackballs - Steer a marble through a 3d maze, avoiding obstacles.

  • Ultima 1:A Legend Is Reborn - Begun as an attempt to recreate the classic Ultima 1 as a 3D RPG, this project has recently changed its name and its focus, but this Tech Demo remains as impressive and promising as ever.

  • Vega Strike - Navigate a 3D galaxy, trading and bounty hunting.

  • Vendetta - Vendetta is a networked multiplayer space-combat deathmatch/capture-the-flag game, developed as a testbed for another, more ambitious (and as yet un-announced) final project.

  • Worldforge - Worldforge is an extremely broad project whose goal is to create an open source Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, including multiple clients, servers, rulesets, and worlds.

  • XU4 - A recreation of the classic game Ultima IV for modern operating systems.

Note that the Neverwinter Nights toolset will not be available for Linux (unless Bioware surprices us all!)

They have already suprised us with the timely release of their linux client...it's only what...6 months late?

Most game major game projects are canceled if they are that late...luckly for BioWare they already have the game released on Windows ;)

This category should have a runoff. In fact, all the categories with more than 10 choices ought to have runoffs.

As a developer on the Planeshift project, I think it is a very strange poll that has both Planeshift (free, open source, and small dev team) and NWN, for example (not free, not open, and 80 full-time pro coders, not to mention legions of artists, etc.). :-)

I'm not complaining though. It is an honor that our project has this kind of visibility in the Linux community.

Thanks guys!

As a developper of Arkhart, which has an even smaller dev team, I agree :)
seriously, why wasnt this poll splitted in free/nonfree categories ?

Planeshift is amasing so far, the dedication of the developers is exemplary. It looks like it's going to be an amasing game when finished

Maybe Im a bit paranoid, but so many cool comments/votes about planetshift during so little time seems suspicious to me...

Well, anyway, there are way too many projects in this poll, and there should be a free/non-free category too I think... would be more fair imho

Don't know if you consider this suspicious or not but this happened after the existence of this poll was announced on the PlaneShift message forums. So of course this caused a few votes to come up all at the same time.

Greetings,

Actually, I am surprised at how few votes we are getting given the announcement on our forums about the poll. We have about 1600 registered users on the forums and about 18000 accounts on our pre-alpha release game server, so 41 votes isn't that exciting...

On the other hand, other games are clearly much more popular and have fewer votes so maybe not many people know about the poll?

well, when I first posted the url on our irc chan, one guy in our crew told me that was stupid to vote for ourselves anyway, so we removed the url eventually... and, yes, not much people know about this poll/want to register to vote...

btw... I too think there are way too many games in this poll... but anyway, there is no point in winning, so :)
