On Servers and Benefactors   8 Aug 07 8:17
 posted by bobz

Given how unreliable this site has been in recent months, it seems absurd to actually announce downtime. However, here I am, doing just that.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 8, The Linux Game Tome will move to a new server. Expect us to be unavailable for awhile until the DNS updates reach your end of the internets.

We are moving off of the server that Penguin Computing has so kindly provided for the past several years, and onto one donated by the exalted Michael Simms, he of TuxGames and Linux Game Publishing.

To compensate Michael for the expense of hosting our site, we have agreed to make some changes. First, the site will be renamed to The TuxGames Tome. Second, we shall begin running banner advertisements for the TuxGames family of products on each page of our site. These ads are quite pretty. They blink and flash! Finally, each day we will post an informative description of one of TuxGames' fine offerings here on our news page, complete with a convenient "Buy Now" link. We hope you will enjoy the changes.

I conclude this announcement with a sincere apology for the horrible site performance you've had to endure lately. After Wednesday, that should all be in the past. Also, the preceding paragraph is all lies. Except for the part about hoping you'll enjoy the changes. We do hope you'll enjoy the changes.

Would it be possible for Happy Penguin to have a new layout? Something more appealing and more web 2.0 (for instance).

Oh hell no. If sourceforge is any indication of what Web 2.0 is like, I say no thanks. Opening two or more tabs at sourceforge is enough to make my 600mhx celeron crawl like a Pentium-90. Even opening just one window is unpleasant, thanks to all the flashy menus and crap. Happypenguin runs fast and smooth even with six or so tabs open, and I hope it stays that way.

(Cue the shouts of "Here's a nickel! Get yourself a real computer!")

Better looking was the mostly what I meant. I’m not going to discuss the benefits or negative thing of web 2.0. I just think that this site looks a bit outdated. With a good looking interface, more users would benefit from this great site.

I was lately worried about Linux Game Tome, I'm glad to see it online again, although it will go online only for a few hours until this night, but any change to better is always wellcome. Only a question, You also change the pre-2000 look to a newer look? It's a bit old fashioned. Good work people!!

Yeah count me in on keeping the art. The wacky 1950s feel just gives the site its own atmosphere, you know? Especially appropriate since Linux game devs love their 'retro' gaming.
(Not that I blame them there. Old-style 2D games are easier to make, and generally more fun -- I mean just ask yourself: was the game in 2D or 3D the last time you found yourself wandering all over a recently-cleared map for ages, looking for an exit, a key, or even worse, anything at all, thinking to yourself "how the hell do I get to the next level"? .... Yeah.)

I would just like to say thanks for all the hard work put into this site by all involved. I have been reading it for a couple of years, and try many of the games featured. I was a little concerned that the outages meant that the site would drop off the internet permanently, so am pleased that you have a new home. It must take a lot of effort keeping a site going. I really appreciate it.

  FUD? posted by Anonymous @ 64.30.46.53 on Aug 7 2007 9:52 AM
There's a comment requesting no Microsoft FUD, but all this talk of ads is FUD and detracting from the simple fact that once the move happens (theoretically), we won't have to wait through regular downtime in order to get to this page. If you're really worried about ads, stop using IE, or work out for a few weeks to prepare yourself for the grueling 4 or 5 clicks it takes to install adblock into Firefox.

I'm very happy that the site admin(s) have decided to take steps to address the irregular uptime of the site. Changing domains and the title of a website don't mean anything as long as the content and ideology of the site remains the same. Other than maybe a few extra links to software that you actually have to pay for (*gasp*) to use, it doesn't seem like much will change, and the reassurance from the new host (Michael, I believe?) is also very..uhmm..well, reassuring. :)

It's okay to have advertisements, but obviously, they should be Linux-focused mostly and there shouldn't be any form of Micro$oft FUD allowed. Hopefully there won't be.

Fortunately I've read all the comments before posting this comment. Thanks for your job and patience to inform about such actions. There are not many sites as reliable and often updated as this one among my favorites, and none being as corpulent source of Linux games. Clap-clap

Great News posted by Thunor @ 91.125.122.80 on Aug 6 2007 12:47 PM
The gametome is the main website for the announcement of Linux games so it needs to be accessible.

I'm sure it's going to cost a pretty penny for Michael to host it and as far as advertising goes, perhaps later we could have a poll on the subject if you want to take it seriously. Certain types of advertising (and content) are more intrusive than others and you've always got the option of adblocking it (a la LG :p ).

Good stuff.

No no, forget a poll. We _absolutely_ need ads! Not just big shiny blinking ads, but ones that play catchy tunes as well! Its the future of FOSS gaming and we have to embrace it.

Re: Downtime does not blink... posted by Anonymous @ 82.152.219.75 on Aug 6 2007 11:36 AM
Let me say for the record, that as long as Tux Games hosts the site for the tome, we will NEVER require them to pay us anything, or do advertising for us or anything.

We already have a longstanding set of links between our sites, each Tux Games game links to the tome for reviews, and each commercial game here links to tux games. This has nothing to do with our hosting the server, it was arranged ages ago as a way to cross-publicise our sites, get more people aware of the offerings in Linux gaming.

Bob and I have had a discussion, and I have promised we will never ask him to do anything in return for the hosting. If he chooses to, that is great, but it is HIS choice. I have also assured him that if he feels that Tux Games or LGP needs to have a negative news posting made about us, he is to go right ahead and do it, cos it will be a cold day in hell before I try and censor the tome, and, his hosting is guaranteed, no matter what the tome says.

Hmm, I'm not really happy with ads but accept them. However I definitely do hate blinking and flashing stuff as it completely distracts me from what I actually am interested in. I've had more than one (interesting!) site that I left after a very short time just because of those annoyances....
Well, let's wait and see, but I really hope it's not a move towards the bad :(
