Ryan Gordon sent the following message to the UT3 for Linux mailing list:
I just wanted to drop a note and say that the UT3 linux and mac work is still ongoing.
Largely we're just optimizing and fixing annoying bugs at the moment.
No release date at the moment. Yes, I know we're already 16 months late.
I'm sorry, we'll get you the game as soon as we can.
Thanks for your eternal patience,
--ryan.

| I have the game in preorder on tuxgames for those 16 months now...
So i guess i'll still be one the people still buying the game.
But i must admit i don't really care that very much anymore about this game.
Most games are essentially forgotten by most people after such a long time.
and unreal tournament 3 is most likely in that catagory as well.

| Don't worry, I've heard it's not good anyway. I have the game, and I guess when they release a Linux client via the web I'll try it, and if they don't then I'll give it to someone, making sure to remind them that it does suck. |

| Yeah, speaking as somebody who has loved the Unreal series from the original all the way up to 2004, UT3 was just not that fun. At first it sounded like UT3 was going to be amazing, and with the promise of a Linux client (I believe there was also some mention of Linux editing tools as well), I would surely have bought it...if it had come out within three months or so. Now I've played the game on the consoles and seen that it pretty much sucked. I'm sure Icculus is being paid for doing this porting work because otherwise I really don't see why he would do it. I mean he's actually completed ports of games -while- working on UT3 -- and who really wanted Prey for Linux anyway? Prey was interesting enough but it wasn't special, and neither is UT3. Icculus should approach companies that are making games people actually want to play, like Bethseda. |

| That's an understatement, for sure... UT3, like most hyped sequels, did a quick nose-dive into the dirt soon after its release. FPS with pretty graphics just aren't special anymore.
They even sold a keyboard-and-mouse set for console users. I've never heard from anyone who bought one. UT3 sells for $10 at the local game exchange.
The big draw for UT is multiplayer, and it can't compete with the MMOFPS that are taking over.
The real benefit to having a linux port is for the dozens of games that use the UT3 engine. Some of them aren't even shooters. Maybe if UT3 is ported, all of them will follow soon. |

They do have a new expansion released (or soon to be) that may renew some general interest. Personally I won't be all that excited about it until I see some unique mods for it like UT2004 has. |

| I purchased UT3 when it was released expecting the Linux port to be released shortly after. In the mean time, I've loaded it onto a Windows system and aside from more detailed graphics it's really nothing special. In fact, even with a very fast system (well above the recommended requirements) I couldn't get the controls to feel as responsive as UT2k4 so I didn't even play UT3 long enough to really test it all out. I hope the Linux version performs better, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I agree with reviewers I've seen on other boards that the UT3 engine was written with consoles in mind.
I guess I should have seen it coming with Tribes: Vengeance. It destroyed everything that was good about Tribes 2 and killed the Tribes franchise in the process. I hope UT3 doesn't kill the Unreal franchise, but they need to get back to focusing on gameplay over graphics. |
