Wooohoooo!!! One of the very best and heavily underrated games is being actively developed again! :D Rejoice I say! :D

wow...just wow. I never though I would see an update to this game...and with 64-bit goodness too.

I hope this will mean a revival of this project...oh and for those who haven't enjoyed it yet...Its a very very innovative 2D side scrolling platform shooter...with mouse aiming. Do I really need to say more.

Oh well, I'm glad there is still interest in Abuse. It looks like tracking those bugs was worth it after all. And despite the game being 12 years old, there is a lot to learn from it in terms of graphics, animation and gameplay.

However, I wouldn't call current development quite "active". I'm going to track and fix all the bugs that are submitted to me, I'm willing to give SVN access to anyone who wishes to help, but I feel that any big plans about it are bound to fail. Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

Oy, I loved this game. Picked up 2.0 in-box in a store for $20 not knowing a thing about it, and played it straight through. Any plans to get the network-gaming back in?

Definitely! My future plans include getting network gaming and joystick support back.

  No good download links! posted by b0ib0t @ 71.161.216.107 on Nov 26 2007 4:47 AM 55555
I remember playing this a while back and really enjoying it. I was quite upset when I went to download it
and found that their are almost no reliable places to get it from. I scrounged and scrounged and
finally got the data and the source together on mediafire.com which seems reliable to me. I'm gonna
burn these to dvd and hang on to them also.

Here is the download link.
data:
http://www.mediafire.com/?2nkkmeaj1l1

source:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fdfyxm9m74j

After you "make install" their should be a config file in ~/.abuse, make sure you update that config file
to point to where you extracted the data archive.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes in doing this. I'm not claiming any affiliation with the project or
anything like that. I just hate to see such a good gem fade away. If mediafire goes down, I'll know in
pretty short order, and put them up somewhere else.

The links aren't working at the moment. I downloaded it from here. If you have a good video card, remember that you can get better graphics by running with the options "-doublebuf -gl -antialias". Check "--help" for more.

  Spoiling the balance a bit... posted by jamyskis @ 84.135.239.131 on Oct 14 2005 12:04 AM 333
I'm going to have to differ from the majority opinion and say that I really am not too keen on this game. It has a certain appeal to it, but it tries too hard to combine the best out of old skool 2D games and modern 3D games, and IMHO they don't blend too well together. The low-res graphics don't bother me, especially since they are so wonderfully detailed. I was tempted to give this a 2, but it is a worthy effort, even if not to my tastes.

Excellent side scroller posted by emceelam @ 67.174.236.155 on Jun 7 2005 8:01 AM 55555
The game itself is quite imaginative in the weapons, enemies and interactive environmental features. The only down-side is the low-res graphics, but like most games from that era, the graphical artists of that time made every last pixel count. It makes a good action game.

From README: "The exact cause of this is unknown, however there is a workaround. If you don't already have a '.abuse' directory in your $HOME directory, simply create it with the following command: mkdir ~/.abuse Then copy the file 'gamma.lsp' that is included with Abuse-SDL into that directory. This should fix the problem and allow Abuse-SDL to run correctly. The 'gamma.lsp' file stores the settings for gamma correction and be adjusted from the main game menu if desired."

DOS Game Spin Off posted by Anonymous @ 64.91.60.149 on May 13 2003 3:02 PM
This is a take-off not only of Abuse, but an older DOS shareware game called Ants (or Antz, or something) ...which is a good thing, because I played that game a few times, loved it, and could never find it again. Now, I can have it for Linux. Double-bonus!! ^_^
