Awesome game, though I got stuck on level 6 - I can't afford any weapons to damage the boss :/

The difficulty level of Astromenace posted by gtfunding @ 64.222.151.71 on Aug 25 2008 4:26 PM
I was just reading the post and realized that I thought the game was difficult in later levels as well. I also just got done playing it on gutsy and after setting up my player I adjusted the difficulty settings. You can make the game every thing from extremely easy to devastingly difficult. It tells you the estimated percentage of difficulty in the lower corner of this this screen. I hope that helps. I must say bravo to the developers of this game. It is by far one of the finest games I have ever played on a nix system. I hope others follow there lead. Another game worth mentioning would be Glest. Have a great one and keep nix gaming.

OK...great game, but on level 11 the mine things that the main boss drops are totally invisible so I have no idea where they are when they hit and eventually kill me.

Only play this if you enjoy a challenge. It becomes VERY VERY difficult after only a few levels.

No, I like a challenge, but I think this is actually a bug in either the game or something in the nVidia drivers because some of the mines being dropped in level 11 (and some of the boss's shots on the same level) are invisible so there's nothing I can do to avoid them. It's a shame, cos otherwise it's a great game.

Gorgeous! If only it wouldn't become so insanely hard to play after the first few levels... :-)

Great game posted by Anonymous @ 75.58.112.111 on Sep 29 2007 4:56 PM

The game is excellent. Quite hard after the first few missions, too. Great job.

I made a donation and I encourage players who liked this game to go to the game home page and do the same.

I'd also be interested in purchasing extra missions, weapons, etc. Just because the code is open-source doesn't mean the author shouldn't be rewarded.

Thanks for the GPL version posted by Anonymous @ 72.93.176.172 on Sep 23 2007 10:16 PM
I notice that you've finally decided to release the game as FOSS (GPL 3) and that people have been nice and not gone and made competing Windows builds... Just goes to show that you CAN do the right thing and not be punished for it.

I also wish to express my gratitude for liberating the programming code. You will be receiving some payment from me very soon.

Yeah, it certainly is nice of them. Unfortunately, there is no makefile in there. I wanted to at least compile a version with optimization flags so it'll run better on my now lower-end laptop.

Is this game free only for gnu/linux?

The source uses cmake. You need to install and learn to use cmake. xttp://www.cmake.org/HTML/Index.html

I too am glad of the source release but they needn't give away the store. Add more levels and enemies and make the data what is paid for. In that case, a build for Windows wouldn't be a hostile act. Redundant maybe but not hostile. Right now, it only takes a few hours to play all the way through the game. The game is well polished and only needs more content to be well worth $10 or $15 bucks (I pulled that price out of my butt because big releases of major games like Quake 4 and Unreal (whichever one is out) can be had for less than $60 if one waits a month or two after the initial release and this is a (well crafted) simple blast 'em up.

Another thought occurs. Keep the game as it now (or leave in enough levels to get a good taste. Up to the first Mothership say). With GPL3 source and "demo data", the distros would likely start including it. That might drum up a bit more business. I'm glad to have a game like this as freeware and wouldn't mind ponying up for some "level packs".

The only wrinkle that occurs to me for this model is that all the ships and weapons seem to be in the executable with the levels being just xml.

Yeah, that's a good idea. The data should be what is paid for, not the source. Especially since most artists don't wanna release their work as open-source anyway ... and I don't blame them. It makes much more sense to open-source the code ... but not so much the art. The art needs another license, probably one that allows free distribution (in case you want that), but no modification and/or re-release.

It's perfectly acceptable to sell source code. The problem is when you don't give your recipients the right to improve and share your code.

  Suggestion ... posted by Draconishinobi @ 69.150.191.29 on May 7 2007 2:31 PM 55555
So far the game has great balance of ships and weapons and all. Overall an awesome game.

However, in later stages I feel the best of the best possible ship and weapons and upgrades is just barely good enough to make it through alive. I mean the generator does not provide enough energy to support more destructive weapons, and the deflector shield is not powerful enough to block some massive attacks. Like in the last two levels, especially the pirate level, it's quite difficult. Of course you can still make it, but with very little health left, and that's at 50% difficulty.

So, yeah, some higher level upgrades would help if you're gonna add more levels. Again, great game :)
