Blob Wars : Metal Blob Solid Screenshot 2D Mission Based Platform Game

This is Episode I of the Blob Wars Saga.

The aim of the game is to go through the levels and rescue as many MIAs as you can. The missions also contain other objectives, some optional. More screenshots are available on the homepage.

The game plays a lot like The New Zealand Story, whilst also borrowing elements from games such as Ape Escape (on the PlayStation).

An experimental 1.15 version now allows players to earn in-game medals for achieving certain tasks, such as completing levels. It works in a similar way to PSN trophies and Xbox Live achievements. You will, however, need to sign up to get a private key in order do so; you can't just get a key and start using it.

You can sign up here: http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/medals/

And, no, we won't spam you.

Nice to see this great game still updated. :)
(Especially knowing that you're busy on Legend of Edgar. ;) )

Hopefully somebody will find or make good CC/GPL replacements for the sounds and music too one day. :/

Nice game, but not the best. Cool platformer, but its sometimes hard to play, control, or understand what to do. I got stuck in a very large level where I had some items but I missed some more, and I was not able to find those missing anywhere, even if I went through all corners multiple times and I was watching radar. This moves the game from 'nicely to play, but hard' to 'hard to understand and confusing'.

It's good to see it develop, but were those copyright issues resolved? It was removed from many package repos, and it'd be good to have it back.

No, the "issues" haven't been resolved. I'd suggest you just visit the website and download the latest version; there are tarballs, RPMs and Deb packages available. I've often found that the games in the repos can be several versions out of date anyhow.

Too bad :(

I do not use 3rd party packages, and I'm actually interested in having it back in FreeBSD Ports tree rather than playing it.

"I do not use 3rd party packages"

Sorry, could you explain what you mean?

Just what I said, I prefer to use genuine package repositories (which are tested, signed and trusted) or (better) source-based ports systems, than blobs compiled by third parties. Also, nobody really makes packages for FreeBSD. That is why it's a pity that those copyright issues still were not resolved.

Why no comment? I completely agree and don't use 3rd-party packages as well. No one can guarantee that they will work on my system with installed library versions, no one can guarantee they deinstall cleanly (provided I use .deb or .rpm-based distribution, otherwise I won't be able to install them at all). This is Linux, this is free software, and this is XXI century - everything is installed via single packaging system. This ensures integrity, clean deinstall and availability for many platforms (amd64 at least; I didn't see 64bit packages for this game on you site) and other operating systems (Solaris package please?). As you can see, you just can't do it all yourself and what you provide on your site is actually nothing. However there are whole lot of distros with people willing to package it for you and make available for single-click installation to many many users, but mentioned "issues" (which are really _ISSUES_) prevent them from doing it. I still hope you'll reconsider and show some interest in fixing these.

At least, you could ask community to do it, because I know there are people willing to, but they are confused because there's still no complete and unambiguous list of what content (by-file) should be replaced and you don't seem to show any interest in this at all taking position like `yes it's non-free, use packages or go away'.

This thread should be of interest to you:

What's stopping you from contributing free sound and music?

This game is incredibly awesome! It is also one of the rare open source Linux games where the author has bothered to make a complete set of levels for it. Please play it, and like it too

What crap is this? I install with edit makefile, make ; make install and when I start it refuses because it 'could not find license agreement'. VERY FUNNY.
Even stracing the execution and glancing through it doesn't reveal what it is looking for (and yes, basedir/share/doc/blobwars/license is there).
I really like the game, but these kind of things piss me off.

Sorry for losing temper - shouldn't write complaints after a bad week, I guess....
So there's an updated version at the web site that includes the missing file. Now I only have some graphics issues left - water areas are displayed mostly as color noise (bug filed to P.R.). Anyone else seeing that?

Best opensource 2D game I've played. Has lots of depth, and high replayability value.

The game is nice, well done. There is a bug when jumping by pressing UP on joystick. Keeping it pressed can allow me "walk" on ceiling and "climb" right-walls.

The graphics are nice, but nothing special. We can feel the need for some more tile graphics here and there, to avoid abrupt changes and to break monotony.

The levels are very "blocky", mostly because of tile graphics used.

Although the game is good, one thing that annoyed me a lot was the character speed. It moves too slow. And since the levels are big, and many times we need to go back and forth in the level, that means we need to wait to much time with little action.

I remember that Sega made Sonic to show how fast Mega Drive could scroll the screen. It also showed how faster a platform game could be. But BlobWars is very slow, even slower than Mario (the fat plumber can run). While in Sonic 10min is the maximum time (and rarely you need more than 5min), in BlobWars you many times you need more than 10min to finish a level (which is a lot smaller and less complex than Sonic levels).
