Chickens for Linux! Screenshot Blow up the chickens with a rocket launcher and shotgun to save the world!!

In the final days of Armageddon, the chickens are preparing to detonate our planet. They are trying to run / fly across your screen, and if even a single chicken succeeds, it's all over. You must stop them! The entire world is counting on you!

There is a Chickens game for DOS, which I was originally going to clone for linux... But I got carried away and made mine waaaay better :)

THE CHICKENS ARE BACK!

I just got an email from someone who wants to take over the development for my chickens game!! I've since stopped working on it, and it's cool to see someone else interested in working on the game, so stay tuned!

Here is the new chickens homepage: http://www.hs-linux.de/chickens

As i mentioned a few months ago, somebody offered to take over the development after I stopped. I have handed over the project to this fellow, and he is planning to rewrite the game from (chicken) scratch, so expect some delicious changes.

It's been fun, thanks to those of you who played!

From the download page

THE PRIORITY OF CHICKENS FOR LINUX FOR ME HAS SUNK VERY LOW. THE GAME HAS BEEN INDEFINITELY PLACED ON HOLD. I am losing interest in programming and I am sad to say I will probably never come back to this game or any others. I have been a slave to my computer for five years.. There is so much more to life than computers, i'm damned sick of programming. I want to make more movies. I still have my website with lots of videos I've done, and other cool shit. www.kosmokrator.org I suggest you go there. P.S. - An ICQ friend is thinking about taking over, or doing at least something with the chickens source code. Even if he doesn't you should go to his website www.michianimations.de

hi, yah it's a clone... but it's totally rewritten, new artwork, sound, more features, etc... so, more than a clone i'd say it's my take on the original chickens 2 game.. thanks for the high rating :)

Hello,

The game is more and more exciting. I have a few propasals and fixes..

1. Fix that god damn sound.. It's slow with the new version of allegro. I'm using gentoo alsa. Everything is up to date (i guess)

2. That "Select mode" page is horrible. Change it please :]

You could add new weapons. Make diffrent and more interesting maps. Change the terrain (some mountains or trees). Let people to choose the map. Make it possible to miss more chickens.. For example 3.. Add bigger chickens :) That give you more points.. Like a bonus ;) If you kill 5 chickns at a time (not tenderizer) you get a bonus :) If you dont miss your shotgun shots 5 times you get a bonus :) And smth like that..

Maybe it's more hard to do it but it's fun :) The game is getting better and better ;) Good luck

Dude, what's wrong with my Select a Mode screen?? I like everything about it...a chicken that chases your mouse, bloody footprints, and music... what's not to like?
I'm sure what the laggy sound problem is, it's probably something you can fix with your allegro.cfg
I'm not sure how far i want to take this game, but i'll consider some of your more plausible proposals :)

After 2 minutes of serious thought and concentration, I've decided to go along with your proposals. It will require a sh!tload of hacking, so much in fact that i'll probably end up rewriting most of it from scratch. Even in the current version, all the new features are junked up code because I never planned on having them to begin with.

I think i'll make an outline of this new version, with every feature and bonus idea we can think of. I will write a somewhat unnecessary php script to let people submit ideas to include in the new version. When i do that (it should be online in an hour or so) I will give a link to it.

It will all be worth it in the end.. it always is.

This is challenging enough to be fun, at least until the novelty of vapourising chickens wears off. For those too lazy to build from source there is an RPM here.

I now have sound (whoohoo) but the sound is "slow" and shattered. The game is also slower.. But it's still palyable.. Thanks for the updates :). Good luck.

Hi, Tried your game on gentoo. I liked it though i have some comments: 1) No sound and no errors. I'm using alsa. 2) I don't like to turn the game every time when it ends. Please make some sort of replay. 3) Did not find any instructions how to switch the weapon. 4) Make some sort of configuration file to change options of the game :) Good luck

hi, thanks for playing :) 1) Every now and then when I run the game I also don't get sound. Most of the time it works, so I think it might be a sound driver problem with Allegro. I installed slackware 10 the other day and I'm (still) using ALSA with OSS modules and the sound works every time now.. I'd suggest updating your sound driver, but you're in Gentoo so you probably update constantly anyway! 2) You're right, I really should add a replay button... You can hit 'R' to restart the game, but only while you're playing, so it's kind of useless. 3) Sorry I still haven't documented it, just use the Right mouse button for shotgun. 4) What sort of options? I didn't think it has much to configure, but if you explain what you mean i'd be more than happy to go along with it. Thanks for your input!

hi, earlier today i released 0.2.1 which lets you play again once you get gameover, and it has some bug fixes and such. Next i'll work on the config file thing and a couple remaining bugs, one of which was introduced in this new version :) The bug is: Flying chickens can be killed with rockets, no matter how high up they are.

umm no... shoot the shotgun by right-clicking. it can shoot as high up as you want. The left-click rockets will only hit the ground.

did you download the 0.1.8 release? In an older release i was using "fix" when i meant "fixed", but they should've been "int" after all. Just to be safe, i ran 'grep fix *.cpp' and there is only one line with fix, but it's unrelated and is in animation.cpp You must be running an older version. If you did download the new version, maybe you extracted the files to the old chickens folder, in which case you should run 'make clean' to delete any old object files that may be lingering.

Must be some allegro stuff... grep the allegro sources for fix, including fix.h

I have the same happening with (latest?) version 0.1.8b and allegro 4.1.9 (suse9.1)
