I have a eepc 701, with a tiny screen, and the menus and stuff don't fit. It seems that most menus on Freeciv waste space. Some guy has to buy a wii-fit for these lazy windows :-). I would love that Freeciv get a estetic enhancement, ... on the menus stuff. I guest is almost imposible to run it on my small netbook, but at least lets make it elegant on desktop computers, and stuff.

Have you tried the SDL verison of Freeciv? The UI is much more compact.

Be wary of freeciv. It's way too addictive for my own good. Really polished game though. AI could use more works (try being a non-war backstabbing bastard - impossible!). You have a lot of game creation options and an insane amount of civilizations to choose from. Interface and game is very polished with nice graphics all over. Haven't tried multiplayer, but single player is fun, fun, fun!

Actually vanilla freeciv sux for multiplayer. Try Warclient(much improved unofficial client) - http://warclient.byethost10.com.
Download: http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Warclient#Obtaining

Multiplayer game using Warclient is 100 times more addictive!

SDL version tutorial mode? posted by Anonymous @ 216.183.82.2 on Nov 30 2007 3:36 PM
Does the SDL version support the tutorial mode yet? I'm building a computer for my nieces and I wanted to bundle in some Free Software games, and I'm curious whether I should include the SDL version or the vanilla one.

I personally get the feeling the SDL client is a bit speedier, or at least more memory-efficient. It also runs better on computer with low resolution screens. Overall, the SDL client has some nifty features and feels more like a 'game', but the GTK client on the other hand is more mature, has more features and is more stable. You should try out both and pick your favorite. :)

No new ideas, luck of creativity, bad design, poor code. Just CRAP, just an unsuccessful attempt to imitate Sid Meyer's Civilization 2. For good open source game example please see "Battle of Wesnoth".

No new ideas and a lack of creativity may be negative characteristics for you, but they don't affect how one enjoys the game at all, and are indeed a plus for fans of civ2. Freeciv is an example of a game with precisely stated goals which have been fulfilled remarkably well. It is a flagship of free software games, not unlike Wesnoth.

The game just exactly imitates the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Point lack of ideas, creativity, design and code flaws towards the original game developers (MicroProse and FISH, if I remember correctly), not towards the people who actually DID like the game and made this open-source clone.

Good game, but bad menu (you have to start 2 freecivs to play a hotseat game, you have to select server options to change basic game options (e.g. the amout of gold at the beginning of the game) (I think you have to separate basic and advanced (which really change the game) options), ...).

I also think it would be nice to introduce campaigns

There's a number of music tracks for Freeciv on our ftp; run a media player in the background if you want music. :)

LOL, music in game is for ones, that know nothing about music and feel no difference if a sound is a drum beat or guitar accord.

The gtk2 is wow too if you want the traditional layout and easier Option changes.

Well, the SDL client is overall more immersive and 'gamelike'. It has been in development for many years now, but only recently became usable.

It still needs work IMO. Too many small unlabelled icons. Not enough tooltips. It's all a little bit "expert user"-ish for my liking. The city dialog is especially hard to use compared to the Gtk version.

Any word on if they've fixed the AI smallpox problem yet? Until that's fixed the game seems to be pretty much unplayable.

thats when the AI builds cities in places a human wouldnt (high density) which is dumb, the now also boast AI cheating as a feature lol. You can prevent smallpox a bit by setting a limit on the distance between cities. in the launch options.
