Wow!! What an awesome game! It isn't intimidating like other combat sims, but still has plenty of action. The "world" is pretty cool, the way the trees sway in the stormy weather, but I would like to see some good ol' freefall bombs, but I am not very good at programming. Overall though, I think it is one of the FUNNEST games i've played in years!!

Yes, it's incredible that a person did this such good game without any cent... well, Many Many thanks. It's a beutiful 3D game, and some little bad detail IMHO is not so important overall. A must ( especially for Linux users ). (By the way: I've got an analog 2-axes and 2-buttons gameport joystick, but in this game - ONLY in this game- the second joystick button doesn't work ! I don't really know what to do... -yes, I checked ".gl-117/conf.interface"- Any suggestions ? )

Either destroy it with lots of machine gun fire or use some ground bombs (you have to choose those when choosing your plane).

I think that the strongest point of this game is easiness of controling the airplane, instead of such difficult fliying simulator in wich you are unable to take-off the plane. If you implement networking missions-combat it would become one of the greatest games that I had ver played. Good Job

Well... I'm not a fond of network play, but I quite agree with you. This game is a damn good one ! What it lacks is just more missions to play, and network play would probably help to fill this lack. I finished the game... now I'm sad ;)

  Sound/Ammo problems posted by Anonymous @ 202.37.101.102 on Jan 16 2004 9:26 PM
I have downloaded the version that is in Debian unstable, and find that the gun fires automatically without me pressing ANYTHING in the first place. From the very second the mission starts, my ammo is being drained (loudly). Nothing I can do turns it off. Ammo then runs out. Great. However, when exiting the mission back out to the Menu, the gun fire sound effect still continues loudly forever. Even over the theme music. It doesn't stop until I exit the game completey. Thus, game is unplayable for me.

However, I must say that the graphics are getting much better. Good job on that. I just wish the tacky splash screen and menu system were ditched for something less Commodore 64.

A network option would make this an awesome game.

A nice and easy to play flightsim. It is very easy to play and has a special "detail calculator". At first start the game adjusts the visual details automatically to an acceptable level while trying to maintain a smooth framerate. Easy to play and a decent 3D blast. I recommend playing this especially if you don't like those detailed flightsims but if you prefer simple "fly and shoot" ones instead.

This is a very good game. Too bad you can't hear the plane's engine. But what happened to the capmaign missions inversion 1.1? They are now just demos? I have a pliot with all missions completed and I can't even play. Not all of the campaign missions in 1.0.1 are available, nor are the cool new planes (Redarrow, Hawk II and GL-117), although they are listed in the "Fighters" menu.

Almost everythink is nice, excpt trees and lack of terrain variety, I think that the authors should improve the look of trees and and some destroyable ground objects:)
A great think that makes me happy is GPL license so I can install it on Debian.

Having played Gl-117 for about a week, I have to add my voice of praise to the rest - this is one very, very slick game: highly playable, great graphics and fast and furious game play. One of the few open source games that's really impressed me.

That said, I'd have to add my vote for firing the gun only when button 1 is held down - click on/click off gets rather annoying! I'd also nitpick and say the title sequence/menus could have a bit more work - pulsating/rotating words look a bit like the author's only just discovered openGL and is putting in every conceivable bit of candy; they really don't look very professional :) The drawing of the bullets could also do with a bit more thought ... But that wouldn't stop me rating this game with 5 stars if I could be bothered to log in ... these are minor issues - the most important aspect of any game is the game play, which in this case is simply superb.

All heavy 3D based games behave like that, if your graphics card and/or driver doesn't support hardware 3D acceleration.

  Re: gl-117 V1 bad work - deleted ! posted by Anonymous @ 217.82.203.56 on Dec 14 2003 4:14 PM
Actually it's normal behaviour even with hardware acceleration, it uses every cycle possible to get max fps. If it would only use 5 %, it would give you only 5% the frames per second or 5% of the details, whatever, games like this are meant to be played fullscreen and with maximum hardware usage. Every 3d - action - Game does it this way. Try Quake, Unreal or whatever, it'll be the same, even 3d Ping Pong, i guess.

I find the machine gun a pain (visually and audibly), and would prefer to just down button as long as I need it, rather than click on and off. But that's just my opinion. Keep coding, keep optimising for performance! Excellent work!

I found this game highly enjoyable and i have managed to finish all the missins on easy (radar base and elite dogfight were the hardest). The trick to the really hard ones are to focus on the mission objective, like for radar base i tried for ages to kill all the guys but then i figured just to go for the main complex and screw the rest. kalvinrulz@netscape.net

Really fun to play!

What I'd love to see in it:

  • more plane types and more noticable differences between them
  • (maybe optional) more realistic physics, e.g. losing altitude when rolling on the side, etc.
  • level/mission editor
  • multiplayer

Wonderful!!!

This has the building blocks of a GREAT game. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep developing it. If needed, grab more people for your team to share the load. This could be one of the best sim games (with arcade playability) for *nix!

I found the stay bullets in the sky and the red x thing confusing. But I managed to track the enemy with the radar thingamee! This game kinda reminds me of the C-64 classic "Top Gun" which had excellent multiplayer action.

I don't like the changes that were made to the flight mechanics since 0.8, just too jerky like there was no inertia calculations. The flight model from the previous versions was way better. But congratulations on the graphics side of things. I can get an acceptable frame rate now with my Radeon 9700 on Windows.

C is faster than C++. Anyone who gives up a little performance for the conventions of C++ deserves neither performance nor easily maintainable code at all.

Please don't post crap. C and C++ are both -languages-; there is nothing intrinsicly faster with C than C++. Repeat: they are languages. Now, if you wanted to compare C compilers with C++ compilers, that would be different. But you instead chose to simply rant about languages without a shred of evidence to back your theory up. You seem to forget that most games (especially commercial) are now written in C++.

I believe many of them use even higher level languages for builtin scripting. When complex game logic is needed it is probably much faster to write in a language where you needn't worry about memory management and stuff. Instead you can devote time to optimize where it is most needed.

C++ is object-oriented extensions to C.

Thus, the C++ language is the C language plus cruft. Logically, C is more primitive and thus offers higher performance.

This debate was resolved many years ago and the resolution reached was the truth: C programs are smaller, more efficient, equally flexible, compile faster, and the post-compiled application is *always* either equal to or faster; than that of C++. On the other-hand, C++ offers a syntax that *appears* to be more organelled (or organized), which promotes self-hyped ease of maintanability, nevertheless C programs are much more conformant to cross-platform computing.

There you two idiots have it. C has always been and always will be prima faci - the greatest and most productive language in the history of mankind. Remember, C++ and C are only distinguishabe by the skill of the persons that use them and the standards the persons may adhere upon. C++ is more proprietary to C; such is evident, nonetheless C is able to be construed by organization. Microsoft hath maliciously defiled C syntax upon their product VISUAL C and thus is an abomination.

Kudos :)

Most of C++ is just making C easier. for instance, function overloading. No overhead since it's found at compile time, but less naems to remember and less typing. Classes are just structs with easier initialization. The only part about C++ that is by design slower than C is using inheritence. How much slower? Slow enough to follow a pointer and read a VTABLE. Compared to the time spent drawing graphics and implementing AI this is hardly a problem. And if you wanted to implement anything like that in C it'd take a lot more work and you'd get the same overhead.

um... no according to 'the c++ programming language' by bjarne stroustrup, he made it *based on* c not *extending* c. he didn't just get a existing c compiler and whack object orientation on it.

First of all, that is just a stupid bastardization of a quote.

Secondly, shut up dumb ass, heh.

I realize you're trolling and I'm biting which is your intention, but I can't help it in the C vs C++ debates. They usually originate from people with only a knowledge of the C language, but not software engineering and computer science. If you had both, you'd come to realise that most concepts in programming are language independent. You'd also realise one thing, that OO programming in C is certainly possible but stupid. The reason it is stupid is because you have to do everything for yourself, whereas in C++ the compiler will take care of some of it for you. One good example is a virtual table. If you wrote an OO program in C, you'd have to manage the virtual table yourself -- including setting it up, passing it off to "derived objects", etc... In C++, the compiler will take care of that for you. True you loose access to it, but then there really isn't a need to access it anyway. If you really do want to access it, you can make a hack on your specific platform to figure out where the VT is stored and do some hacky-casting to get it. Anyway, I'll stop ranting now.

If arbitrarily much performance could be bought cheaply, hardware manufacturers would not be spending their billions on R&D.

Having said that, “C++ on modern hardware ought to be fast enough for anyone.” But you still have to decide whether the extra layer of abstraction is worth the extra layer of bureaucracy, especially as regards the extra debugging time tracking down those stupid pointers.

That's why I agree with the original poster: use C when you need speed, and modern scripting languages—which do better what C++ was intended to do—when you don't. But there again, I never even mastered writing syntactically correct C++ code.

This is a fun one! I suck at it (I've gotten through 2/3 of the levels in easy mode, but "Main Base" has so far stymied me-- and, anyway, I keep running into the ground), but I'm having a blast with it.

Not a realistic flight simulator at all... indeed, it's a good thing, so that when I run into the ground my "shield" gets diminished and I bounce off. Otherwise, I'd never have gotten through the tutorials. But it's fast playing and fun. (With Quality at 1, I usually get "Perfect" FPS on my PIII-550MHz with a Radeon 7500.)

Debian package installed easily [apt-get install gl-117 ;)], joystick config was quickly findable in the menu and the throttle/ruder mixup was quickly corrected in ~/.gl-117/conf.interface, great so the game could start :)

Gameplay is fast and simply, you shouldn't expect a real flightsimulator, but more WingCommander-with-ground, the game reminds me a bit of Furry^3. There is a tutorial and there are a two handfulls of missions, ranging from air-to-air defense to attacking ground vehicles, there are weather effects, nice lightnings and things like that. Even so it is simply it basically has everything what you would expect from a real game. Its fun, plain and simple

Drawbacks? Well, the gfx is not really spectacular, the planes are bulid up from a handfull of triangles and look worse than what you have seen on your Amiga. The explosions aren't spectacular either. The ground is smooth, too smooth in my taste. The game also slows down on the highest detail level, so I had to switch to the lowest on a Matrox G450 + 1GHz Athlon, on that it was very fluent, but there is lots of room for optimizations (level of detail?!). The shoots also look quite blocky. Sound is there, but again nothing spectacular. The fonts in the menus are pretty jaggy.

After all a pretty nice fast action game, that could need quite a bit of cleanup and optimization. Never the less its real fun flying around and seeing other planes shooting at you, having seen such action for a long time. One of the better linux games around and actually a pretty playable.

Glut is a pretty basic OpenGL library (well, you can't really get more basic than Glut) and should come with every distro on this planet, if it doesn't came with yours is probally better to switch your distro.

I've been looking for a fighter flight sim that balances realism and fun well, and GL-117 is that game. It could use a slightly better tutorial for players (like me) who aren't very good with flight sims, but with a little playing time you can pick it up, and when you do you'll find yourself hopelessly addicted.

Version 0.5.5 has fixed pretty much all of the issues I had with the earlier versions. Also, it's much more fun, having real missions! The climactic "Canyon Battle" mission at the end is quite tough, and loads of fun.

I say any game that can have me pretty much obsessed nonstop with beating it gets 5 stars. Even better for nifty effects, like the "stormy" levels having trees that sway in the wind!

All my base are belong to gl-117.

This looks like a very fun game to play. I like the rendering of the landscapes, very evocative. And of course it's fun to blow things up in midair. :-)

I might recommend a different interface, though. I don't like using the mouse to control my plane; perhaps an option for pure keyboard control? Or even redefining the controls?

I look forward to updates to this game.
