Hatari Screenshot Atari ST emulator

Hatari is an Atari ST, STE, TT and Falcon emulator for Linux, *BSD and other Systems which are supported by the SDL library. The emulator is open source software and is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

The Atari ST was a 16/32 bit computer system which was first released by Atari in 1985. Using the Motorola 68000 CPU, it was a very popular computer having quite a lot of CPU power at that time.

Unlike many other Atari ST emulators which try to give you a good environment for running GEM applications, Hatari tries to emulate the hardware of a ST as close as possible so that it is able to run most of the old ST games and demos. Of course you can run normal GEM applications with Hatari, too.

License: free

Additional System Requirements: A fast (1GHz or more) computer, the SDL library (http://www.libsdl.org/), the zlib compression library (http://www.zlib.net/), and optionally libpng and the portaudio library.

Thanks for keeping up the work! posted by Anonymous @ 81.216.59.194 on Mar 31 2008 11:59 AM
Just want to thank the programmers for all the excellent work they have put into this emulator. I LOVED my old Atari and love being able to still play my old favorite games on my Linux machine.

It's really wonderful to see how Hatari still is being developed and improved after all these years and I get happy each time a new version is released. Keep up the good work!

Excellent. I never had an ST although a friend did and I used it once. I played a flight sim which I think was F16 by Digital Integration.

Good and getting better every release. Good to play the games you'll probably never finish :) Like Eliminator (love that game)
95% of the popular ST-games will run, very nice job.

New EmuTOS release posted by Anonymous @ 81.17.205.64 on Jun 1 2005 12:52 PM

There's a new EmuTOS release that fixes a *lot* of issues with Atari games, both free and commercial ones:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/emutos/

For example "Ballerburg" (freeware) game works now as do half of the games coming with the original 80's Atari PowerPack sales package (JumpJack, Nebulus, Xenon...).

Free TOS for Atari emulators posted by Anonymous @ 81.17.205.64 on Feb 27 2005 8:16 AM
For a GPL version of TOS (the Atari ROMs), checkout EmuTOS:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=204520

Many older games are very picky about the TOS version with which they work, so there are only a few games and demos which work with EmuTOS, but for people who don't have an old Atari in their closets, at least something works with it. For example...

  • Posh demo, one of the nicest:
    http://checkpoint.planet-d.net/releases.htm
Just unzip the archive and start Hatari with 'hatari --tos etos256us.img --memsize 1 posh_rv1.msa'
  • STarball, a shareware 3 level flipper (there are several places where you can get it).

For the Atari news, see:
http://www.atari.org/

For how to use an Atari, see for example:
http://www.zhell.co.uk/sthelp02.html

Hatari emulates Atari ST (not STe), i.e. it doesn't support the very latest Atari games ( middle 90's, requiring e.g. DMA sound or blitter), but most of the older games and demos work perfectly with Hatari if you've got the right TOS. For those Hatari is IMHO the best the Open Source emulator.
