Hedgewars Screenshot Worms clone

Each player controls a team of several hedgehogs. During the course of the game, players take turns with one of their hedgehogs. They then use whatever tools and weapons are available to attack and kill the opponents' hedgehogs, thereby winning the game. Hedgehogs may move around the terrain in a variety of ways, normally by walking and jumping but also by using particular tools such as the "Rope" or "Parachute", to move to otherwise inaccessible areas. Each turn is time-limited to ensure that players do not hold up the game with excessive thinking or moving.

A large variety of tools and weapons are available for players during the game: Grenade, Cluster Bomb, Bazooka, UFO, Shotgun, Desert Eagle, Fire Punch, Baseball Bat, Dynamite, Mine, Rope, Pneumatic pick, Parachute, Hellish Grenade, Watermelon Bomb, Seduction.

I am addicted now. This game is great.... I do think the keyboard layout is uncomfortable, but that is a minor niggle. This is a great game. Very fun. (Oh yeah, and full-screen support is all fscked up, but that is probably the fault of my i915 video card)

Best worms clone ever. I hope the QT interface will be replaced by a full in-game user interface though.

Hope QT4 won't be replaced by ***** GKT toolkit. I am glad developers are doing very good job. Every new version is better and more enjoyable. Keep going ;-)

It gets better with every new release. Sounds, graphics, music and multiplayer is beautiful. It even has some single player AI.

qt may be nice for the developer but not necessarily for the user, I find it ridiculous that I have to compile a new version of qt in order to run a game ... silly. I take a star off for this.

I agree. While QT is the second most popular widget library on Linux, it still isn't included in a default install on so many distributions. If KDE isn't the default DE, it's almost guaranteed that QT won't be installed.

I realize that competition is a good thing, but for users it's a pain to install another widget library when another fully-functional one is already installed.

And what do you suggest then? Not use Qt, not use GTK... invent square wheels? What about dependency on SDL_mixer? Is it everywhere?

All I'm saying is that I just had to compile qt4 because I only have qt3, it not only took a while, but the install size is close to 1 GB. Just for this game ... is it worth it ?

Yes, totally. And Qt4 will be on every desktop soon :D Actually, having binary package with static Qt4 libraries compiled in, Qt4 wastes only 10 Mb + the game

As of v0.9.4, the game is pretty good. From the looks of things, the engine is in a nice capable state, although something that it'll need in a later version is an in-game GUI. As well as a few minor screens like the team editor, weapon drop settings and hopefully a level editor.

There are only two things that this game really needs to be (IMHO) an excellent Worms (Worm Party) clone. First thing would be the game's physics. Compared to Worms, the characters are far too heavy, don't take as much damage and the weapon blast areas are much smaller. Due to the physics, the ninja rope is currently quite useless.

Second thing would be the content. Worms had plenty of weapons. Hedgewars only the very basics. I expect this to change greatly in later versions, but at the moment I felt the game was quite boring compared to Worms. When I play my sister, once one of us has won the round, at least half the terrain has been destroyed.

I think the ninja rope is awesome. It's not the easiest thing to use but if you can use it you can really make use of it. Perhaps you just need practice?
