Java Classic RPG Framework and Game Screenshot Java Classic Role Playing Game Framework and Game

A new open source RPG framework project with OpenGL display system written in Java. The framework's goal is to provide a basis for complete classic style RPGs. It plans to provide OpenGL display - with help of the JMonkeyEngine - in the way old games like Wizardry 7 and Eye Of The Beholder did and to incorporate a living world with dense AI and less but present scripting. The framework aims to provide a selfcontained world engine that will provide a game experience without scripted storyline, like Rogue on a more complex level.

Based on user feedback I've traced down a slowness problem in the resolution settings dialog of the game.
Link to the working and tested patch. I've found the problem that caused that slowness. The previous patch is not working, but this one is tested and reported back by users to work.

Extract the downloaded zip file in the games directory, overwriting the ./bin directory.

Source updated in SVN. I'll post a fix pack on sf.net later as well.

Fix pack added to SF.net download section (jcrpg-20091104-fix.zip), and a brand new package is there too. Those who have the 20091104 already downloaded need to use the fix zip only. Those who want to download the project just now, get the version 20091122 zip.

ugh.. another java release posted by drarem @ 72.184.17.36 on Nov 19 2009 11:41 AM 22
Before you rant me out, hear me out. I downloaded and unzipped it to a folder. I followed the download&run instructions, installed both java 6 jre and jdk. I did: sh ./jcrpg.sh and a screen setting dialog came up.(800x600, full screen check box, etc etc). I could not change anything on the dialog, even clicking 'OK' and 'CANCEL' were unresponsive. It was like trying to click on a splash screen - you get nothing. I appreciate it's a distribution and I don't have to be a programmer to run it, but in my opinion java has gone crappy in the past couple of years. MegaMek also gives me headaches, and can only get worse.

If that happens, (i suspect its a problem with SWT / Java in Java6), please try Java 5! It's reported to resolve this issue.

Be so kind and try the following patch: link
It contains the bin directory with a modified dialog box code.

I ask because I don't have that problem. Also please try to click longer than usual - if it's slow, it might help.

Testers test reports, contributors (especially 3d monsters) are highly appreciated! Come to the jcrpg forums and we can discuss things. :D

Usually in this kind of games the authors focus in the gameplay and many of those games has little or no graphics. This project has gone to the opposite extreme, focusing in having pretty graphics but absolutely no gameplay.

Hello, elcugo! I'm the lead developer of the project. You've written some good points in your post! But don't forget that this game is in "pre-alpha" state, and that the undertake and scope of the game is not a small thing (a wholly dynamic, self-generating world, with changing ecology and economy and 3d graphics). I consider it success that an OPENSOURCE no-budget project has got so far that some people even call it "pretty graphics". Especially because the relatively the least time (although still much time!) has gone into the 3D modeling by contributing 3d artists and sometimes by me.

So the game is just half way to a playable version, but as you can see we're focusing on the gameplay elements now. A big percent of UI elements has been added to the game meaning that the gameplay logic also being heavily developed under the hood.

And don't forget that this is a test release, so we're expecting people to test it for a little while and report bugs if they find any. Although not a tremendously big amount of people try the game actually (for 1 year around 7000 downloads), but some days we have useful test results, bug reports. I wish we had more, but I think we WILL. :)

Note that currently the project is in need of new 3d models contributed by the people. Especially mythic monsters. topic

I know, that's why I haven't rated the game. I tested jcrpg a while ago, but I didn't get past character creation screen. After reading the FGD forums I learned I have to setup the stats RIGHT before it let me PLAY. When I could play it you could only move around in only 4 direction in a turn based fashion. (Ihmo 3rd person view would be more apropiate here).

7000 downloads? That's very imprenssive! There's not much to test that's why you don't get many, most people will only play it for 5 minutes and never look at it again.

I don't mean to sound too negative, but you shouldn't get frustrated by not having people testing your game. Hopefully you will get a lot when the game is actually playable.

I'm not frustrated at all! :-D The right amount of people is testing it for its current state, and the right amount is interested and a very nice group of people became interested in contributing to it. So we've a very bright horizon! I'm rather content how things are going at the moment - a free, opensource community effort is rounding up nicely.

About the gamelogic and concept -> its four direction movement is sooo cool, to have the resemblance of good old classic rpgs. Many other classic elements will have place in the game. That's why its called 'classic'. :)

I forgot the setting up stats before playing: it is just the classic way, just like in NWN1,NWN2 and much of the old classics does it this way. Just like when you start a pen and paper RPG you have to do it before the game session begins...so i think it's good idea to do it before playing.

I precise that the Java Game Tome replaces the other site because people had to pay to rate games. Therefore, 2 programmers and me created the Java Game Tome: www.javagametome.com It is ugly but we are waiting for a template to improve the look and feel.

Project has already got very nice amount of contributions (3D and 2D) licensed under all free GPL/CC-by/CC-by-SA licenses - so it is completely free: code and media. If you want to help the project and free gaming and show what you are capable to improve opensource media content and gaming join the effort at the projects forum: http://forum.freegamedev.net/index.php?t=index&cat=9

Re: Java Classic RPG Framework and Game posted by Anonymous @ 78.131.65.159 on Mar 25 2008 9:12 PM
it's recorded with gtk-recordmydesktop, some skipping in the music is present which normally isn't in the game. These videos are for people who want to check what's the project about. In general it's not a quick thing to get people to contribute media to an Opensource project unselfishly. So it's maybe not much, yet it means hours of work for many. :) We're heading a good direction I think, week after week, day by day more attention from new people.

I'm with the author, I can't believe how people harp about something they know little about. What makes you think you're qualified to comment on Java if you haven't done anything with it? But keep on believing how terrible Java is, it just means more opportunities for me - Java has brought me a steady paycheck for almost 9 years now.

I agree with you. Java has given me a lot of professional opportunities. Many people criticize Java without knowing it. This game is fine and I encourage the author to go on working on it!!! Good luck! We must not give up.
