Kobo Deluxe Screenshot A port of XKobo to SDL, with considerable enhancements.

Kobo Deluxe is a port of XKobo to SDL. XKobo itself is a descendant of Namco's old 'Bosconian', which can be seen as part of the 'Galaxian'/'Galaga' family of space shooters. In XKobo (and Kobo Deluxe), you fly a ship around in 2D space, destroying other ships, dodging bullets, and destroying massive space platforms by shooting their cores. There are 50 levels (and each level is different every time you play--the platforms are randomly generated), that loops with increasing difficulty. Kobo Deluxe adds sound, better graphics, and much more to the original game.

  A genius game. posted by ErikH2000 @ 24.19.36.65 on Feb 24 2009 1:25 AM 55555

I don't really play shooters, but this one I love. Sound and graphics are decent, though nothing to huddle gawkers around your monitor. What is great about it is the gameplay. Controls are refreshingly simple--I just turn autofire on and it comes down to moving in 8 directions. The base concept is a whole lot of fun. Whoever said the game needs to be less griddy should either be shot or forced to play the first fifty levels, because that is what allows the game to be so enjoyable. You can precisely choose angles of attacks on bases due to the grid alignment. And lots of rewarding pattern behaviors develop.

My only complaint is that the game randomly pauses on me every 5 minutes or so, dropping from fullscreen to windowed mode. Maybe something with my config--I dunno.

If you wanted to make it Kobo SuperDeluxe, have handcrafted levels (and a level designer) in addition to the generated ones. Don't get me wrong--the algorithms for generating levels are awesome. But the game elements cry out for some precise level design. Imagine bases that you had to plan a general strategy for attacking.

Read the hints on the project page. Improve your strategy. You may also get back to one of the previous levels to collect more lives. Or just try it again and again until you succeed.

  Nice little game posted by tuppe666 @ 81.178.213.68 on Nov 15 2006 4:35 AM 4444
Its a lovely little game, and one of the best shooters available on Linux. I would definitely give it a go, although its interest is quite short lived. For an occation 5 minute blast this is hard to beat. Although be warned this game does get tricky about level 5.

Did you know there are 50 levels, and when you finish them the game starts from the beginnig, with more and faster enemies. But once you completed level 1600, the difficulty level "wraps around", so levels 1601 ff are very easy again. 8-) Phantasic game!

The graphics may be dated, but the game play is quite good. This game certainly benefited from much care on the part of the author. Not only did the game capture the spirit of previous games like Bosconian, but it also advances the genre with pipe shaped bases and lots of different enemies.
