  Great game! posted by moose @ 79.219.249.47 on Dec 19 2008 6:56 PM 55555
LordsAWar is one of the games witch I enjoy to play. A lot of different armys, a good interface and nice music outweigh the graphic, which could be better and the bad german translation. To improve this game, which is already really cool, I'll help to translate it into good german.

I'm considering making LordsAWar be playable over the internet in a multi-player fashion. If 50 say yes on this forum, I'll implement it.

Yellow bar, near the top of the patch, 3rd link in: "Forums"
http://www.happypenguin.org/forums

Post a poll there, then post a link to the poll here.

Secondly: Have more confidence in your own judgement, dude. :) You don't need anyone's permission to work on the features you think would be interesting.

It's not a matter of not having confidence in my judgment, I just wanted to know that people were paying attention to the LordsAWar project. Adding the network play feature is a lot of work, and it's nice to know that there will be somebody out there to play LordsAWar against.

Network play has landed! Try it out with the tarball, or by compiling the source code from svn://lordsawar.com/lordsawar. I haven't released 0.1.1 yet, and I'd like to get more testing and feedback on it.

  Re: LordsAWar posted by Anonymous @ 217.129.41.84 on Feb 17 2008 9:06 PM
No it wouldnt. The version shown on the screenshots used some of the original graphics. Also since the graphics are on a different format, copying them trough printscreening or whatever technique he used, would make them perfectly legal. Finally, there's the possibility of copying the graphics by reconstructing them pixel by pixel, which wouldnt be illegal aswell.

Copyright doesn't work that way. If you sit there and write out a copy of the Harry Potter novels by hand, that's still copyright infringement. Replication of the content is forbidden, it doesn't matter how you do it.

Just checked the current version templates. As a matter of fact a lot of the current graphics still belong to the original game.

I asked the copyright holders of Warlords 2 if I could use the original Warlords 2 artwork in LordsAWar and their answer was no. They seem to have a soft-spot for Free Software though, so maybe in the future their position will change on this matter.

A shame. But i suppose they cant sue if someone simply reconstructs the original artwork pixel by pixel. Taking in consideration the level of detail used in W2 graphs, i think even a brain dead monkey with access to mspaint could do it. I might take a shot at it myself.

If the result of your efforts is a pixel for pixel match to the original work, that's still quite obviously a derived work. Don't waste your time, it won't clear any legal issues.

If your goal is to create something "similar in feel" that is not an exact match, by all means.

  Re: Installing posted by benasselstine @ 205.210.52.80 on Jan 19 2008 9:46 PM
The game is provided in source code form, and installs on a GNU+Linux operating system with the following commands:
$ tar -zxvf lordsawar-0.0.6.tar.gz
$ cd lordsawar-0.0.6
$ ./configure
$ make
$ make install
Debian users can just type `apt-get install lordsawar' to install the game, however the version in Debian might be a bit older than the very latest version on the lordsawar website.

This works for lenny/testing and unstable. For etch/stable neither the source from www.lordsawar.com nor from www.debian.org works due to includes (e.g. gtk::entry, cairomm, ...). Does someone have patch? If not, wait for lenny!
PS: The guys from freelords.sourceforge.net try to catch up. But it's far from being Warlords 2 anymore.

My advice is for Debian stable users to wait until Lenny. I think most people use Debian unstable, which is good because LordsAWar works with that.

Are you on windows? I recommend you use Linux. Compiling works on Linux flawlessly (unless you use a crippled distribution that tries to prevent you from compiling if you so desire, which many distributions to by crippling programs by default without asking you if you want this or not)

  Good start posted by Anonymous @ 66.29.163.1 on Dec 25 2007 11:50 PM
This is so far a good start to making a Warlords II clone. However, I noticed a few flaws with it, mainly that it sometimes crashes. Also, the randomization seems to put some capital cities a bit too close together. Also, I seem to pay more for upkeep than I get for income. In the mac Warlords II demo, that was never the case. Also, of all the scenarios, only one loads. I hope this helps. I couldn't find a link to post a bug report.

Why the fork from freelords? Is it a preference for C++ over Java?

The website says that Lordsawar is based on the abandoned Freelords code. I was not aware that Freelords had been abandoned, but development does seem to be very slow. I also notice that this fork does not use PARAGUI, so it has some significant changes which the authors of the original code may not approve of. In any case, I have been playing Lordsawar, and am impressed with it so far. It crashes a lot, but that is to be expected with a first release.

Please submit your crashes in the form of bug-reports. I will gladly fix bugs! The lordsawar code base is based on the Freelords C++ codebase. The Freelords team has decided to swtich to Java.

I was anxious to get the game to a fun and playable state, and I didn't want to wait for a new Java version of Freelords to come along. Also, I prefer hacking in C/C++ than Java.

Greetings Warlord! :D

You're right about the gfx, they're very close in style. The background music style might be more challenging to duplicate maybe?

BTW, does this game have or will have keyboard shortcuts and stuff? I hate using mice. Actually I don't even have one anymore! :D

First of all: Thank you for attempting to recreate a game that I enjoyed thoroughly

The basics are there, grafx are ok for now, but it is not balanced yet. I think that the game AI should be first on the list; to create a balanced game, with capitals as apart as possible and logical decisions of your adversaries. This should be the first goal for now. I know this is one of the most difficult parts of the game, but it is the bedrock. If you build on sand instead, the structure you build upon it will break down and crash. This will slow your development at first, but will produce a much better end product. Your progress so far is impressive, please keep it up :-)

I don't have much interest in improving the artificial intelligence. I continue to hope that a good AI developer will come along and improve lordsawar. The capital cities being as far away as possible should be doable though. Thanks for playing LordsAWar!
