Hi,

I tried the game, and (of course!) also wanted to use my steering wheel (Logitech Momo). However, the game is unplayable with it :-(
Even with full rotation of the wheel the car does hardly turn, so I'd have to brake down to (almost) halt to get around even not-so-sharp turns. So some configuration options for sensitivity etc. are desperately needed! Apart from that it looks like a very nice racing game. I'll give 3 stars for now and wait with playing it more often til the wheel issues are solved (racing games via keyboard aren't that much fun....)

I thought I'd give it another go, still terribly not fun. No increases in times, and even though I completed it once before I'm 20 minutes into simple 8 and still haven't passed it. As several have mentioned, increase the times slightly, maybe have easy/hard times, and frankly if you touch a railing anywhere outside of 10 feet from the finish line, just have the car explode on contact it saves everyone time.

No need to be aggressive ... In the 1.1/1.2, we've designed the "Beginners" mode (until the dynamic story mode is finished) so every people can play the game, even without particular skills. Trying to finish the "Advanced" mode is great, but it's not an easy task, and that's what we want.

but I've previously completed the advanced mode, and completed the beginners mode again this time around, and yet I'm still running into a situation where I'm 20 minutes into a single track I haven't beat it. That screams of a "luck" based game and not a skill based game.

"Skills" is when you can finish any track of the game whith only one try, as many regular ManiaDrive players are able to do. If you must retry 100 times a track that you've already finished, then you're not skilled yet (and the Beginners mode is here to explain you how to do).

We already had this discussion together a few months ago ... we added a Beginners mode, despite your insults (read again all your previous posts), and you keep saying the same thing. Sorry, I can't do more, I refund you ...

Just beat the game last night posted by Anonymous @ 12.25.236.196 on Aug 23 2006 6:46 AM
If you are complaining about this game being to hard then I guess it achieved its goal. TrackMania is the same way. The point of the game is to keep redoing the tracks until you have them memorized and can haul ass at top speed through the entire thing. The only one that is impossible imo in 1.2 is the second to last one. All you have to do is cheat to beat that one :) There is a big jump that you'll encounter about 1m30s into the run (its also the last checkpoint). Don't keep moving forward; stop and turn around and jump off the lower ramp, down, into the first tunnel you enter when starting the level and drive across the start line back wards. This might be the only way to beat the map although I came within 7seconds doing it the regular way. Even using the technique described above will take several tries. The last track just don't hold down the gas when you hit the turbos and you'll launch high enough through the checkpoint and hit the start line. There are several maps under the Internet Tracks section but I haven't found one thats as good as any of the game supplied maps. I think many of those game supplied maps use ideas from trackmania maps as well. This is an interesting game and will only get better as the engine improves, imo.

Thanks for your report, but giving the trick to finish the last track in not fun (nor fair). All the fun of this track is finding the physics trick ...

Re: Just beat the game last night posted by Anonymous @ 12.25.236.196 on Aug 25 2006 1:37 PM
honestly I think the 'cheat' is supposed to be there. why would they put that tunnel on a straight away? it makes no sense at all to me. the tunnel itself offers a perfect way to jump down that height and stay on the track. if the tunnel wasn't there you'd bounce right off the track because of the height. if you are referring to the physics trick on the last map then really anyone who has played the game to the last level is going to figure it out after a hand full of tries anyway. one other fun thing i've found in the game is if you land down on the grass and you hit a ramp from the underside fast enough it will launch you super high into the air. can't wait for more maps. there are a few internet maps that are interesting but nothing great. maybe someone can write a program to convert trackmania maps to maniadrive.

*Every* track of the story mode can be finished without any cheat. This was tested enough times by enough people, believe me ;)

About the last track, I can confirm you that thousands of players were able to finish the track and found the trick by themselves (as you did, no ? :), as you may see on the "Live Scores".

Now that you've revealed two "secrets" of the game, we must work harder and harder again to release a new set of tracks for the next "big" release :)

There's no plan for importing TM tracks, but ... maybe you can wait for a surprise with "Stunts" tracks ... ;)

"Simple 8" is pretty hard, but I don't agree with the rest of the critics that the game in general is very hard. Furthermore I think the graphics and the controls of the car are pretty good - not like in other games where they allow you to do anything (and you stay on the track) or nothing (because it's not playable). Furthermore the challenges are much fun - I like it better than Torcs for example... keep up the good work ! a few comments : - rear speed is much too slow ! - an overview of the tracks would be a good thing - could be nice to have choice between 2 or 3 different cars - and... change the time for "simple 8" to 32s PLEASE !!!

Very nice game but the gameplay could be extended a bit : the maps should also have laps support so we could extend the fun on certain maps and it would also be nice to have an option to mirror maps for even more challenge :). Here are some things that I think would be a nice add for the future : temperature effects(rain snow, ...), upgrades for cars(later later on :) ) and more importantly, shadow car so we can see how the heck those people on the net got so good times on maps.

Needs some more polish, but good start posted by grumbel @ 83.135.237.5 on Aug 18 2006 4:22 AM 333

Nice little game, good music, ok graphics, nice menus and stuff. It has however some annoyances, first is that there is no way to set the fullscreen resolution, which causes the game to run rather slow here, switching to window mode helps, since that resolution one can set, would however be nice to play in fullscreen at a lower resolution then what is currently set for the desktop. Next the physics, while this is of course a try&error racer, it would be nice if they would be a little bit more forgiving, currently your car will get out of control extremly easily, a little touch to the crash barrier and the car gets totally out of control, landing after a jump and car will get out of control again, this all causes the game to be a lot more luck based then it should. The camera also as some problems, especially when driving through a looping it gets really crazy. Last not least there are also some smaller problems with the graphics, most important one is probally that the track and car are simply to dark, some better lighting parameter might help here, some fonts also pixelize a lot.

In the end this is a fun little try&error racing game that could need some more polish to really shine, but its already a very good start.

The big difference with Maniadrive's soundtrack is that it uses high-quality freely available tracks from magnatune.com. This dramatically improves the experience, check it out!

Potentially a fun game.

This game is all about a car with fun physics belting it round a stunt track.

Unfortunatly the game designer doesn't have enough confidence that this aspect will be fun by itself and he has decided to cripple the game by making the player have to jump through tight time-based hoops.

Which, unfortunatly, surely misses the whole point of the game -fun physics on a wacky track.

As a person interested in games design, I understand the temptation to try and make the player work hard and generally try to make the game challenge last longer by placing arbitrary limits and punishments on the player.

In actuality, I don't care if I can "complete" the game in 20 minutes. I will however come back again and again if I know I have unfettered access to race around whatever track I darn well like.

Shame. Otherwise solid.

When i start the game, i get the following error:

game/mania2.static: error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This has to do with me not having alsa installed, because i use oss. Switching to alsa is not an option for me....got enough of bitching around with that and hardware-mixing.
I tried to figure out how to compile it on myself...well, i couldn't make out how to do this, too. The informations on the website are more than sparse, would be cool if you could put there some contacts or stuff.

And simple 8 map is kind of hard for 3rd map, next one i found this hard was with cactus hurts, with that kind of time frame it should be somewhere near that map. Thx for great game.

I agree with the others commenting about the difficulty. You replied that Trackmania is also a difficult game. This is true, but there are major differences between this and Trackmania:

  • Trackmania has four times you can beat for each level: Bronze, silver, gold and author's. If you beat bronze, which is challenging the first time you're on a level but still not too hard, you get to play the next level. ManiaDrive only has ONE time you can beat, and this time is at about the same difficulty level as somewhere between gold and author's times in Trackmania.
  • The handling in Trackmania does take some getting used to (and again for each new car, scenery, etc), but it is still vastly superior to the handling in Maniadrive. You don't randomly bounce around if you hit the railing in Trackmania. Also, you can drive in reverse at the same speed as you can drive forwards.

While I'm at it, how can you call this a Trackmania clone when you don't include the primary and most interesting play mode in Trackmania, which is the puzzle levels ?

We can't do this another way, see project's forum: ODE is almost never packaged with a correct version and libphp is not available with every linux distrib. If you've better idea, contribute.

I don't really object to needing external packages, but why don't you just state somewhere that they are needed, and maybe provide a script to download them ? Downloading stuff during configuration and compilation phases will make it very hard to package this for a distribution.

Acceptable graphics (But don't reverse this Renault, please...), very nice music (and I'm not a punk rock fan), steering should be improverd as well as times to complete levels should be about 2 seconds longer (note to developers: this game is easy for you, but think about people who play it for the first time). However, this game has a potential, and in some future version it will be really great. Good job!

I gave it 24 hours and came back to it. After a grand total of approx 80 attempts based on the time suck "Simple 8 track", this will never be popular unless some changes are made to the game play. The controls are garbage and this needs a difficulty setting. You might as well hardcode the game to reset the level the second you touch the railing, because a slight touch either results in the car trying to hump the railing or it catapulting across the track or through the air. The difficulty of the game will never lend itself to any kind of wide appeal.

There has been more than one person say how difficult it is, and this is only a small number of the people trying it. I'm sure I could pass the levels too, if I wanted to spend hours and hours time sinking on dodgy controls. My point was that your average gamer isn't going ot put up with that.

You must know that this game have passed a long beta period (a year ?), and during this period, a lot of people were saying that track times were too short. Believe it or not, most of them are now in the "top 10". ManiaDrive is not an easy game (as Trackmania, just try it) and needs a bit of training. Sorry that 1st level is too hard for you, but about popularity, the first step is now already done ...

But, hey, you may be pleased to know that a new "world" is planned, with a new car, new physics, new blocks, and a more arcade gameplay. I'll contact you as a beta tester of this world, if you want ;)

Like I said, you'll probably find a small group of people who don't mind time sinking endlessly to become masters at the game. Your average gamer is not interested in that kind of time sink. A simple difficulty slider/option would solve that and give you the best of both worlds. It would allow those who want to spend an hour a level to achieve perfectiont to do so, and it would allow the more casual gamer the ability to enjoy the game.

I see part of the game screen in the standard 1024:768 viewport that I have, while the desktop is actually much larger. It's impossible to play this way, because I see half of the action at best. It's like I'll have to use the mouse to pan & scan while playing, as if I was directing a movie.

If you're using Xinerama, see console output to redirect the game to one of the screens only ("--xinerama-screen 1" for example). If the problem is that you've a "big" virtual desktop, you may test window mode (add --window to command line). Hope that helps !

I tried the game with poor 800mhz laptop without real 3d-card under XP. It run solid 20fps, which was what I expected. The game is certainly fun and addictive, even though quite hard. Unfortunately no matter how much I'd like to praise it, there are few flaws which make the game experience extremely frustrating. Worst thing is the controls. The game has extremely arcade-stylish controls, so the car turns really fast. The basic idea is to just accelerate and hit every corner really accurately, since this won't deaccelerate car almost at all. Slowing on the corners is not an option. I got really frustrated with the way the car turns, because it's way too fast and unaccurate. The problem comes raises it's ugly head especially when you try to straighten the car after turning over the corner, because it's almost impossible to correct the heading without hitting the... well, here we come to second problem: rails. Car really gets stuck on rails and once you hit rail it's almost certain you have to restart the level, because you are unable to take the out from rail without making 90 degree turn and hitting the opposite rail. Rails remind me awfully lot of the original Carmageddon, which had similar stucking-problems with many surfaces (one being rails). The physics simply don't work out that well. Also returning back to ground from jump makes the car do strange things too randomly, especially when many levels have few jumps. It's really unfortunate to point this kinds of flaws, because this game could be one of the best driving games on Linux. Too bad, I still prefer classics from 90's, Stunts and Stunt Car Racer, since they have much better controls and "physics". Atleast player feels what the car is doing... IF the developers are going to fix physics and controls, were going to have one hell of a diamond in our hands!

ok, time to correct few points I made earlier about problems with rails and physics. I'm not sure if he problems are only windows related, but I had no problems when playing with linux. I believe that the problem is keyboard polling, because 20fps probably gets only 20 polls / sec, while running under linux I get 200fps and controls are much more accurate. Rails also feel much more "bumpy", which is only good thing. There are still many minor flaws related to physics, but I'm much more satisfied with the game after trying it on high end machine.

there seem to be some serious issues either between Windows vs Linux, or low end vs high end. Players who are getting around 20-30fps have great difficulty completing levels while players with high fps have much easier controlling... The physics also seem to act differently depending on how fast computer is working the calculations. I would also prefer to have some key to make steering more accurate, like while pressing shift or spacebar the steering would not be so wacky.

Great looking game, looks like it would be lots of fun. I'm not much interested in replaying the same level 50 times because you have to be absolutely perfect. I can't even get beyond the first level because the tiniest mistake means its impossible to beat 9 seconds.

The idea is not to do tracks perfectly, but to learn how to drive the car. After a few moments, you'll be able to finish the first level each time.

after 20 attempts, the best I could do with a run was 9:029 so yes, it is about doing the track perfectly. I've also noticed under FC5 it fails to run if I'm not su root which is pretty friggin' awesome.

If you do the track perfectly you get less than 8 seconds... About the need of being root, is pretty usual in Windows world to save config on the install dir so you can't execute the game if install dir hasn't write rights for non root users. You just need to ask devs to save config in ~/.maniadrive in Linux and in C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\maniadrive (aprox) in Windows.

I'm going to have to change my rating, because honestly this isn't "fun". You have a game, where you essentially have to drive the track perfect with no room for error. You combine that with mediocre controls where one second a tap is a nice turn, and the next second the same tap is almost a 360, and you've got a recipe for frustration. I'm sure there are some out here who don't mind spending 30 minutes on the same 30 second loop, only to rinse and repeat a dozen times, but I don't think your average gamer is going to put up with that. Most will see it, say "Hey this is neat" then try to play it, become extremely frustrated and never touch it again. How hard coudl it have been to include a difficultly scale that would adjust the time required for each track sot hat if you made a very tiny miniscule mistake you wouldn't have to redo the level? I can't imagine that hard.

Frustrating but good posted by James Gregory @ 81.179.90.105 on May 17 2006 5:45 AM 55555
Frustrating gameplay at times but I'm still playing it. Also, incredibly good music for a free game, very Tony Hawks-esque punk stuff.

What a great game with good graphics and super music. But I am only on place 1192 at the 1st internet track. The car engine sound could be a bit loader.

It's pretty good but a tad difficult. But then I guess if it was easy it would be too easy.
