Open Quartz Screenshot Free Ego Shooter that can function as a remake of the Quake game content.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many free Quake engines but not a free Quake? Well, OpenQuartz will try to fill this gap. Open Quartz is a project to supply GPL artwork to create a fully GPL game based around the GPL Quake sourcecode. The pak0 module contains content (maps, models, graphics and sounds) and Quake-C code which controls the behavior and rules of the game. There is also a playable version available that has bot support. Anyone who ever wanted to create his own First-Person-Shooter can use OpenQuartz as a base.

Unfortunately this seems to be abandoned and half of the data currently in it sucks, although there is some good stuff in it as well.

Well, try to hit the "esc" key.

Another possibility: the game cannot find the data files - check wether the binary is besides a folder called "id1" and wether there are any files in this folder.

What's so special about the darkplaces engine? I tried it with the open-quartz single-player "experience" (one single-room level with a couple of trees that you blow up). The level-choosing stage tried to give some shadows to a weapon in the centre of the room, but apart from that I couldn't work out where the modifications were (compared to the 'openquartz' engine binaries supplied with the game.)

Or does the level have to be specifically designed for 'darkplaces'? Will tenebrae (excuse the speling) have 'better' graphics?

I've just realised what a stupid thing I've said. Open Quartz ships WITH the dark places engine. However, the latest release of dark places seems to have more entries in its graphics and video menu.

I'm expecting a bit too much, aren't I? Please disregard my comments, I seem to have gone a bit fubar :-)

Hi, my name is Tei, I am other quake engine coder (not Lord Havoc, the DP coder). Tenebrae is cool, I love Tenebrae, but Tenebrae is more a proff of concept, a quick hack, tutorial implementation of 3D cards tutos, than a solid engine. Anyway the new stuff coded on sourceforge whas impresing. DarkPlaces Its a active project designed ON LINUX that crosscompiler for linux and windows. The code is good, elite, not only for eyecandy related stuff, but for network, entity management, modding enhancements, etc.. Its mostly a rewrite of Quake on elite quality code than a simple another Quake engine. The latest DarkPlaces are enhancing Doom3 alike features for low end computers, and is adding new stuff for modders. ITs more like a "Quake 1 version 2 Beta"or something similar. Is somewhat betaish, and Its also somewhat dev oriented... mostly whatever you can test is already there and work, but need interface, because new cvars are not documented. Maybe you can download older versions of darkplaces, and try. Or wais a few moths, and download the future darkplaces versions :D

No more betaish. Nowdays is a 4 th generation quake engine. Like HL2 and Quake4.

L O. This is pretty much my fist intro to quake. I tried the old quake 1 demo many years ago, and didn't like it. Possibly because I was on a really slow 'putr and I found it kind of awkward. But I tell you what - now I'm a real convert thanx to this! A couple of minor bugs here and there, but looks good and there's loads of great potentia for itl.

If the sound did not work for you, grab the sources of the engine from http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/ and edit the makefile to use ALSA

This project has been static for a while and it's nice to see the guys over in Galbraith Games are still working on it. I really admire their work, it's always been really top quality, "free" and "open source" (GPL and LGPL).
