Pengupop Screenshot Online multiplayer clone of Bust a Move

The aim of this game is to shoot colored balls so they form similarily colored groups, causing them to fall out of the screen. You can either win by clearing your entire field, or lose if any balls attach below the white line near the bottom.

The main difference between this game and the classic Bust a Move, is online multiplayer support, with menu options for playing against random opponents, or pairing up with other players in a chat lounge. There is also 201 single player levels.

Very addictive, great game! posted by Velmont @ 129.240.78.250 on Oct 27 2006 12:05 AM 55555
It has a much faster gameplay than Frozen Bubble. Very addictive. We play it all the time here at a computer society. The high-score is really fun, and you can watch replays on the net. Linux Format reviewed it, and was very positive.

Very nice. Cool sounds, challenging gameplay. As predecessor said - more informative longue please. STH like ranks of players would be good to choose one with appropriate level

Good game, but I think it needs polish graphics wise. The internet play needs to be more informative, for one a list of users would be nice! Like Battle of Wesnoth.

I think this has worst graphics than FB, just getting some nice effects on balls could look better. Nice playn' online & chat is a must.

I think it's more of a question of taste, because I actually prefer the Pengupop graphics rather than Frozen Bubble's. Anyways, I agree with you about the chat. :)

I think this project should join the FB team. The main difference is language used.

Failed to Connect to Master Server

Yep, I patched it to throw out idle players (several people stayed connected for days), and introduced a bug at the same time. That's fixed now, but the server will crash once more before the patched version is started. I've put up a watchdog to restart the server whenever that happens.

Nice start posted by CrazyTerabyte @ 201.29.48.181 on Jun 16 2006 8:20 PM

Nice polished graphics. :) Here are my thoughts/suggestions:

  • Allow internet play. (currently, can only play by "name")
  • Maybe allow internet play with a "master server", for finding players.
  • Too many ball colors make the game much more difficult and less enjoying. I think we should reduce the number of ball colors, or at least make this an option that can be modified.
  • Everything into one executable? Nice, interesting, never saw a Linux game like this. However, this makes "modding" or "customizing" (graphics and sound) more difficult. (which leads to an interesting suggestion: themes support!)
  • Please write a manpage, a README, or at least print something when passing -h, --help, -v, --version to executable.

This game looks nice, but wouldn't it be better to "expand" (or extend) Frozen Bubble to add multiplayer support? Since Frozen-Bubble is already a good (single-player) game, and pengupop will be a good (we all hope this :) ) multiplayer game, and both are very similar, why not join them? (hum... maybe because they are written in different languages?)

Internet play is supported: You just agree upon a game name with your friend, start a named game, and have her join that game. This is controlled by a master server. Joining a random game will set up a game with another person having selected the same option.

Developers, could your check you licensing policy? The code has no licenses, except for bin2c.c which is BSD licensed, yet the main COPYING file contains the GNU GPL license. I mean, both are alright for the community, but having this game BSD licensed would make it easier for *me* to work on additions.

Chat will be implemented, as well as command line options for making IM client plugins possible.

Frozen Bubble currently provides a nice, free single player Bust a Move experience. I will add one to Pengupop too, but not necessarily within the first couple of months.

You can press F to toggle fullscreen mode. I am aware that this is not obvious enough.
