Very good, this game. I am impressed.

The graphics are simple, yet with enough detail and well-done to be attractive. It's schematic aspect actually adds to the game. The gameplay is good -- it just takes some time to get used to the way it works --, and it is also very balanced. I feel that you deal as much damage as you can take -- it's not like thise games where the player is an indestructible killing machine, and the enemies ugly wimps. Here, a shot does damage, the obstacles you his can be mortal, etc.

Definitely, I like it. I need to play it more, but I doubt that will change my rating. Very good, and very finished it seems.

Just one detail -- by pushing things you can break through walls. That should be taken care of -- we players may be temptated to exploit it. ;o)

The music is great, feel is great, BUT i really got FED UP AND PISSED by the first level. Running around getting killed ten times is NO FUN and if you think this is a fun game, change your mind and go quickly to improve that pain in the ass level. Put some arrows, give some hints, do anyuthing you want but make that goddammed level easier.

Yes, the first level can be rather frustrating. We'll find ways to make it easier--probably by reducing the number of agents, or making them run more slowly. Until we do, I guess you'll just have to keep running like hell. :-P

No!!! Don't make it easier! It only took me about 5 gos to work it out! It's not that hard! If you're not getting where to go after about a dozen tries then you've got issues!

OK, how the hell do I finish "Core Dump"? I've flicked all three override switches but when I flick the big one it just explodes with no chance of escape!!

OK solved that. Right, now my only critisism is that the game is WAY too short (seeing as I've just completed it after less than 4 days). Need more levels!

Yes, the game is short, but I think networked multiplayer is on the horizon...

Core Dump is a bitch. I'm just proud to have made it this far. Good job on the game. DON'T make it easier. The difficulty level is what makes it so damn addictive.

As lvl one designer, I guess am to accept all blame. Yeah, maybe it's a good idea to introduce people into SDB in a easier, more gentle approach. But still, it only gets harder from here... TIP: Stick dangerously close to the walls. Close enough to put max distance between you and your enemies, but not touching (because you'll die). Also a good idea to memorize enemy locations (they don't randomly spawn you know). With this in mind, you'll be able to fully enjoy the "close calls". -Gregory Peng

Or use the old strafe+forward trick. Vector addition for the win!

Texture size and SDL crash posted by Anonymous @ 81.64.88.173 on Jun 11 2005 6:40 AM
At first it crashed with an OpenGL error, since I had problems with texture larger than 512 pixels (either width or height) which appeared only white in other games (trigger) with DRI on Radeon 9200, I resized all large png textures to 512 pixels with The Gimp, then it worked a bit longer but now crashes at the very end of the intro : Started Sat Jun 11 16:00:43 2005 Initializing SDL...ok Initializing sound...ok Setting video mode 1280x800x16...ok Using Tungsten Graphics, Inc.   I don't get it... posted by Anonymous @ 69.140.148.9 on Jun 10 2005 10:11 PM
Start game...run away...get cought...20 seconds. Pressing fire doesn't do anything, so I guess at the start of the game I have no gun. Can't seem to figure out if any of the objects except for the doors do anything. (Then again, I don't get very far.) Please hit me with a cluestick and tell me how to play this game!

The objective of the first level is to reach the end of the level without being caught. You just have to run.

I guess I'm a moron. Tried it 10x, couldn't do it. Got fried on doors or caught each time.

10 times isn't enough. It took me more like 20. It doesn't really get any easier in the next level, either.

"This game would benefit from autotools" posted by TheBohemian @ 213.54.207.42 on Jun 10 2005 8:48 PM 55555

Ok ..... done

Please test this patch which brings autotools niceness to sdb ;).

I sent it to sdb's devs already but I am sure a more experienced autotools hacker will find something to let it shine even more.

Btw: My personal wish for 1.0.3: An ingame gamma setting

Nice, but hard posted by James Gregory @ 62.181.235.221 on Jun 10 2005 4:20 PM 4444
High presentation values, but damn, is it hard. I have to restart levels about a zillion times. Or maybe I'm just rubbish.

Have properly played now... posted by komakino @ 83.67.32.133 on Jun 10 2005 11:32 AM 55555
I've now properly played the game (I'm on level 4) and it's really fantastic. I love the gameplay and the weapons and it's bloody hard to get past some parts. Should keep me going for a while. Has a kind of half life feel to it apart from not as dark.

  Version 1.0.2 posted by Anonymous @ 68.226.93.209 on Jun 10 2005 5:03 AM
It might be a while before it shows up on the site, but Version 1.0.2 has been released. (sdb.gamecreation.org) It now compiles properly with GCC 3.4.x. The black screen/OpenGL errors will be fixed in the next release, hopefully to come in the next few days.

"Also, I've released the level SVG source files for those of you who want to experiment with level design."

Although I would prefer to have them in the source package that is a good step already.

/me hugs matt
