Too laggy. Unplayable. posted by Winter Knight @ 24.20.63.134 on Jan 21 2010 11:15 AM 1

The lag makes this game unplayable. There is about a 1 to 2 second delay between pressing the arrow keys, or double clicking the mouse, and my character moving. Disabling key repeat has no noticeable effect.

After creating my account, Stendhal would not let me login again. But that's OK.

Hi, i am wondering on what server you are playing? I checked the logs on stendhal.game-host.org for the last 3 weeks and there has been no significant server side lag spikes over 50ms.
In case you have played on the official server, please open a support request at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=1111&atid=201111 including the output of these console commands:
linux/unix: traceroute stendhal.game-host.org
windows: tracert stendhal.game-host.org

It's a UI problem, not a network problem. No amount of network lag should cause the UI to respond so poorly. As for filing a bug report, I am sure they already have one for this. I tried Stendhal a few years ago, and it was laggy then too. Several people in this thread have complained about the same thing. This bug is so old, it seems unlikely that there wouldn't already be a report for it.

The problem with Stendhal using 100% CPU in the drawing code thus making the gui unresponsive was fixed in 2007. There is an easy wax to tell drawing and network lag apart: Move the bag window. If it moves smoothly and your CPU does not go to 100%, it is not that old bug.

It's a nice game. Unfortunately I don't have the time it takes to devote to a mmo Any Dog Breed

You need Java to play this game. I think it should be mentioned as "additional system requirements" instead of some kind of map of the game world.

changelogs should be... changelogs posted by draeath @ 192.30.100.251 on Dec 3 2008 5:01 PM
That's not a changelog, that's a press release written for people who play the game.

Give us a list of changes please, not a story.

Java dependencies posted by Anonymous @ 77.181.125.85 on Dec 14 2007 2:48 PM
This game hardly depends on some closed source libraries, including Java language itself. Doesn't work with open source Java implementations (like kaffe).

The "closed" source dependencies are due to Swing. It should be easy to write a port to SDLjava, but we do lack of time and motivation to do it, although it would be welcome such a thing.

BTW Sun freed Java 6, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Are you still java-trolling after all this time? (tipp: use a different ip-address next time). As of writing this there are no more closed source dependencies. The last remaining part was the Java GUI ("swing") which up until a few month ago hat no free replacement. This is, however, not true anymore as Sun released that under GPL.

True :) And by the way, it doesn't matter for players if used libraries are closed or opened. We want to play. If you want to argue about such things, argue with developers by e-mail. I will say it again, Happypenguin is a Linux Game Tome !!!. It's not a place for such discussions. GO AWAY! ps. Thanks for the good game. And I think that posts about "freedom" should be removed !!! And authors should be banned from posting any comments. It's quite frustrating :/

That is not entirely true, some parts of java are sill not free. Look here for details.

Quoting that web page "As of JavaOne 2008, the only remaining encumbrances are the sound engine, SNMP code, and a few data configuration files within the imaging APIs. The SNMP code is not strictly required by the specification. So nearly all of the encumbered components have been replaced by Free software alternatives."
Sound support is optional in Stendhal, it does run without it after printing a warning into the log file. Those graphics configuration files are not used. And of course Stendhal does neither depend on SNMP nor use SMTP.

It is a good game. It is not our fault if some open source implementations of Java are not reliable enough, for example kaffe and gcj, I wish they would work better. You can already use the OpenJDK. Therefore, nobody should bother the author with this kind of troll. Good luck to the author!

Hmm... Is the screenshot resized or something? I'd like to see a normal, fullscreen screenshot on here, that'd make things more clear. All I'm seeing here is a bunch of sprites and two (one?) people chatting.

Yes, I know, there's a link to more screenshots, but presentation is everything.

Hehe, all the characters are taken (with permision) from the Charas project. Perhaps is is a coincidence or it was intentional by the maker of the NPC. But fun remark :)
