Great game! posted by Anonymous @ 144.139.65.216 on May 6 2007 6:25 PM
Great game! The graphics aren't quite as good as VDrift, but it's still lots of fun. (The download size is a bit big, but that can't be helped, can it? I use dialup. Anyway, VDrift is a lot bigger, which probably has something to do with having such great graphics.) The controls, cars, AI's and physics are really well done. The scenery is really nice on some of the tracks but terrible on others, and some of the car models are a bit low-resolution. (That's probably just to keep down the download size, though, isn't it?) All round, it's pretty good, though. :)

Terrible graphics, and hard to feel how fast you're driving. Also, it took a while for me to figure out how to change camera angle. Not very freeeesh.

This game has tons of potential, but it really seems to be stuck in the mud and going nowhere. While various people are making 3rd party contributions, the core of the game is still plagued with undrivable (and poorly modelled) cars and unfriendly AI drivers.

Development has slowed to a standstill, with commits to the CVS repository becoming very few & far between, and next to no discussion happening on mailing lists. There are many features that could & should be added, for example weather, night racing, network play, campaign mode for solo play, a greatly reworked user interface, the list goes on. It seems though that nothing substantial's happening with any of the above. From what I can tell, code patches and artwork submitted by non-Torcs-developers are mostly ignored.

I hope I'm totally wrong regarding the above, but I don't think I am. The game deserves a thriving community of developers and contributors similar to Vdrift, but instead its like a ghost town. Torcs has the potential to be a really great racing game. Its a shame to say it, but as things stand now that potential will not be realized.

Thanks for the game and made it available on GNU/Linux.____ The Linux binary installer not work on PCLinuxOS 2006 (0.93a), so for PCLinuxOS user, download the source and compile it.____ But, you must delete this file /usr/X11R6/include/GL/glu.h , and get glu.h from xorg devel for Mandriva2007.0.____ Because glu.h from xorg devel PCLinuxOS 2006 is not competible with glut.h.____

This game has given me lots of fun since I discovered it a few years ago. I usually change all the good drivers to run on porsche gt1 and choose a porsche gt1 myself. So I always drive a kind of Porsche GT1-Cup. Some times I just configure it to go without me as a driver and I just watch the robots drive. Robots like those called Inferno or those Olethros robots are very entertaining. I'd really love to create race tracks and robots myself. But I won't have the time to do it. One thing that really bugs me is that I have a new laptop with an ATI x600 graphics card and torcs performs on this hardware not really well. This is due to bad 3D performance of the ATI linux driver, I think. On my older laptop with NVIDIA it runs perfectly.

Why do developers.. posted by Anonymous @ 24.58.240.168 on Nov 17 2006 10:19 PM
enforce the usage of GLUT (any version), when the *only* thing they use it for is changing resolutions and going window<->fullscreen ?! Ridiculous implausibility for one to be so lazy~! (no you can't have my patch, it's not that difficult even in the slightest, TYVM)... Drop the junky like a monkey and come up with something more reliable, even if it's SDL.

Yeah... NASCAR racing is so fun The default nascar car doesn't go as fast as the other ones. Why? It goes a lot faster if you drive behind another car (I drove it at 297 km/h compared to about 260 km/h by itself) But the bt and berniw cars go, like, 320 km/h ...how do I make the nascar car go faster... is it something to do with the aerodynamic settings or something? The formula 1 car is pretty cool, and so is the wheel-2 track :) Thanks a lot all TORCS developers

You can edit the default setup for the human driver in ~/.torcs/drivers/human, file car-cg-nascar-rwd.xml. There can be as well track specific setups in the tracks subdirectory.

Bye, have fun, Bernhard.
