Curious. Although the author lost his source code, he released the binaries under GPLv3.

After having played this, I can't say there is much to see. The controls are very oversensitive, and all turns are in 90 degree increments. Navigating around the map is extremely frustrating. Other than the starting room I was only able to find a single small room (the kitchen), and I was only able to find one examinable object... and examining it did nothing.

That was exactly my experience. Maybe I'd have found other rooms if I had somehow managed to navigate more reliably, but this was the game was practically unplayable. That's extremely sad, as the game looked so promising :-/

well, I guess at some point in the future he may face a GPL violation suit. If he doesn't have the source don't bother trying to open source it.

Nah, I think it is reasonable to believe that he is the real author, and that he honestly lost the source code-- in which case there is nobody who could sue him for GPL violation except for himself.

But in the case where only binaries exist, a "Public Domain" release makes a lot more sense than a GPL release.

I DID lost the source code AND the original data files for the maps, so I cant produce better, updated releases. And when I meant GPLV3, I was really mistaken - I should have done more research on Creative Commons licenses on the game content itself. About the source code, I wil try some scavenge hunting @ SVN and I will post the code ASAP (but I must tell you there's nothing much more than whats on the newer version of the engine. The SVN is http://sourceforge.net/projects/bzk/develop).

About the game controls, sorry, but I wish I could modify it - the engine looks and behaves a lot better now.

On how to navigate: near the entrance of the kitchen, there's a hallway to the left that leads to much more clues. In fact, I should have renamed this game - there are no riddles but only some "treasure hunting". The real challenge here is to discover what to do in proper time.

And why the controls are so sensitive? This was originally designed to run on my cellphone ( as you can see here: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cZKg-BNRK_g/SnD9tvXUnCI/AAAAAAAAACc/dQgj7cSvU5A/s1600/27-02-09_2254.jpg ) , but its control system is very unreliable. I never that the chance to fine tune the game. But I plan to remake it someday, doing it the right way. I had to strip lots of cool stuff out of it. (some just to simplify the scope of the game, some to improve the framerate, as you can see here: http://corporatedrones.wordpress.com/2008/03/31/bzk-update-end-of-march-08/ )
