Unreal I Installer Screenshot Installs Unreal 1 under Linux

Chunky's announcement on Linuxgames:

I've put together an Unreal I installer for Linux for if you have UT installed and an Unreal I CD. It's like the old unrealI installer was, but it's cooler for several reasons:

  • It doesn't complain about opening vortex2 when you try to start a new game
  • It has modified openUT stuff for things like prefs dir being ~/.loki/unreal
  • It uses Loki_setup
  • The secondary storage footprint is much smaller, since most stuff ends up symlinked out of the UT dir.

License: free

Additional System Requirements:

  • A working UT installation
  • Unreal I CD
  • Sound: Play in X: Play in Console: Multiplayer: Network Play: 3D Acceleration: Source Available:
no yes no no no no yes

Alternative for playing Unreal in Linux posted by FreeSoftWorks @ 200.146.105.2 on Aug 3 2007 12:02 AM 4444
There is a mod called Oldskool Amp'd (Google it) that allows single player maps to be played under UT with the same weapons from Unreal 1, all you need to install it is the umodpak(currently available for Debian at /oldstable, I'm sure there are packages for other distros too, just google for it or for "umod Linux").

Then, if you copy all content from Unreal 1 CD folders Maps, Sounds, Music and Textures to your UT respective directories without overwriting existing files, launch UT and Enable OldSkool Amp'd in the Options menu, you should find a "New Single Player" option in the first menu. By clicking there, if you already copied the content of Unreal to your UT folder, you will find a choice to play the original Unreal 1 with all the difficulty levels supported. It might sound a bit more complicated, but I never had trouble using this method.

Unreal I and UT? posted by ericsp @ 145.88.209.33 on Jan 21 2003 4:45 AM
Just a dummy question: I have Unreal I but not UT. The tekst suggests that I need to install UT first before I will be able to run unreal I. Is that correct?

yeah thats right, you need both. from the readme (http://icculus.org/~chunky/ut/unreal/README.Chunky): ---------------- (2) INSTALLATION ---------------- Before starting the installation process with "sh unreali-install.run" you must have Unreal Tournament Installed, and the UnrealI CD in your CDROM drive and have it mounted.

I suppose there is, you can install the UT executables and libraries, without the content (you can download it from loki). You won't be able to play UT though, so it would be difficult to test if you actually have a working installation, but it should work... I haven't tried this installer though, so I'm just guessing here...

I have run into problems on level 35, Illumination. The white fog never clears, and I can't get out of the room. Has anyone running Unreal 1 on Linux got this to work?

    Hi,
I haven't reinstalled Unreal since I swapped distributions so I don't really know how far I got. I think I soon install it again, and I might need your workaround too :)

Return To Na Pali has been done.

It runs off the UT engine also.

Just bought Unreal from Tuxgames and it runs perfectly. Great work Chunky! I have not played Unreal before, but loads of UT. This is fun! But why is there no Unreal game in the game tome?

"But why is there no Unreal game in the game tome?"

Personally, I think "Unreal" is covered well by listing Chunky's installer.

I was never much a fan of Unreal, but Unreal Tournament is excellent, and being able to play it on Linux has been a godsend. Now this kind soul has made Unreal 1 run on my Linux box, without any trouble, and it's great to be able to go back and enjoy it again for the first time, if that makes any sense. Thanks!

This brings some nostalgia onto my shiny Linux box, those were the days...
I almost damaged my mouse once or twice by hitting it hard onto the desktop, this game still scares the sh** out of me eventhough I'm running it in "tourist" mode...
    Hat up to you, Chunky!
