et is too newbie friendly posted by Anonymous @ 80.181.86.152 on Feb 3 2004 6:14 AM
please don't take me wrong, i _love_ et. however i think this game is too newbie friendly. Everytime and everywhere i play guys are calling noob each other, it seems like no one cares to read manual, teams are often unbalanced, spawnkilling rules ecc. Maybe the way to go is joining a clan... but i suck at et! :)

You use the terms "too newbie friendly" and "I suck at it". So most of us are going to simply disgards any comments you have made.

Find out a server with a good admin : he will ask newbie to choose good classes and kick player using mass destruction weapons on spauwn. Balancing team can be achived after some time by voting "Xp shuffle team"... Have a nice game !

  W: ET, Source posted by zealotasd @ 4.33.210.104 on Jan 28 2004 4:19 PM 4444
I downloaded the source and extracted it with unzip.
grep --
Q-MATH.C contains all the rotting x86 assembly language. I didn't see any x86 assembly in any other files.
LICENSE.RTF containts the text to License the use of the "Software." It isn't the GPL, and it limits use of the software in any way to be limited to non-commercial. that stinks

Other than that, this release had me riled up thinking the source will be about 100MB, like Valve's Half-Life 2 source was rumored. Instead, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's source code in win32 .exe (.zip) form, WET_Source.exe, is no bigger than 2.2MB.

I converted the source package to "wet_source.tar.bz2" and it is now about 1.6MB. It is available through Gnutella. 3dgamers.com and 3ddownloads.com servers are choking a little bit, so try Gnutella while I still have it shared.

Welcome.

I was correct a little while ago that WET_Source.exe is not the actual complete engine source code and is only used for building mods to the game.

And there I was...deleted.

I meant to say "corrected" because I was *corrected* by tyreth at linuxgames.com that the WET_Source.exe is only for mod development and is not the complete engine/game source.

ahh okkkkkkay..did I miss something...I am beyond insulted to think a happypenguin.org post has nothing to do with linux..the directions FOR the source installer are ONLY for windows..i'm sure this IS a mistake and would like it cleared up immediately if not sooner..that or the site I went to isn't showing directions for linux as well...how sad indeed. Thank you! ;-0(

Source code is source code, what's your problem? No one to hold your hand? It would be nice, however, to get ahold of the source for the engine aswell, there would be the possibility of making a 64bit version.

  win32 (.exe) file, self-extracting. posted by zealotasd @ 4.33.210.104 on Jan 28 2004 3:41 PM 4444
see subject.
In a Linux or POSIX/Unix-like environment, some win32 (.exe) files that are self-extracting .zip can be directly unziped. All you can do is make an attempt and if it doesn't extract then try running it within the confines of wine. Try going to a shell prompt to view the contents by issuing the command unzip -l WET_source.exe
A self-extracting zip file (.exe) is not different in principle with how ID Software releases Linux versions of its software as a .run or whatever, but is a shell script with its payload appended to it and the shell script portion will use the shell environment's available commands to administer and isolate and install (extract) the desired data (such as a Quake3 patch, et al).
All you need is wine, not whining.

Compiling the source code on Linux ? posted by Anonymous @ 81.56.130.128 on Jan 28 2004 10:15 AM
Anybody knows if the source code is usable under Linux ? It's only provided as an .exe for Windows and it seems Visual C++ is needed to compile it :/ But how was the Linux version of ET done ? Maybe a question to ask on the Splashdamage site forums, but I'm not a developper, so I prefer to ask here.
