X2: The Threat Screenshot Egosoft's acclaimed space simulator ported to Linux by Linux Game Publishing

More than 20 years have passed since Kyle Brennan, test pilot of the X-Shuttle, was catapulted into unexplored space.

Now, take up the role of Julian Gardna, convicted of the theft of a transport ship, and given a second chance. From this point on, the choices are all yours.

In the immersive universe of X2, there are no rules. Return to a life of piracy and crime, build your own trading empire, join the ranks of mercenaries, or become an ace combat pilot, commanding a fleet of starships from the bridge of your carrier. Any path is open to you.

If you wish to, follow the evolving storyline, and take your place among the greats of the universe, or blaze your own path to glory.

But beware. Something is moving in the remote areas of the galaxy.

X2 features stunning graphics, beyond anything seen before in the space genre.
Open ended gameplay allows you to choose your path freely, in a universe that would take you almost 2 days playing time just to fly from one end to the other. Pilot any of over 60 classes of ship ranging from the tiny Argon Discoverer, a one man fighter, all the way to the Teladi Albatross, a huge carrier class ship over 2km long, capable of carrying a squadron of fighters, all at your command. A complex yet intuitive interface allows complete control of your empire. Be it a trading fleet of merchant vessels flying between the factories and stations littering space, or a fighter wing of deadly Split Raptors.

hi, x2 is a real nice game. but wanting fullprize for a game that already was released in a german computer magazine for about 5eur? forget it. yes i know it is for linux the market which is smaller etc. but why do you they not port games released this or last year? (x3...). because the license is cheap to get! but the price for us does not show it at all.

They are working on porting X3. How would you know what the cost of licensing X2 was? I highly doubt that is something freely given out to anyone. Add to the fact that they do have to pay the coders to port X2.

mmh let me think about it: a computer magazin includes the game in an issue. how much do you think the could have paid for the license then? not much, trust me. the graphics, sounds etc. are already there. no work to be done here game physics etc. are platform independent. what is left to be done is to write graphics/sound output, controller input, network. if they are lucky opengl is already included as well. so the port can be handled by even a smaller company. the market for the game is smaller by far und risky, I will give you that.

It's still two very different things... one group has access to distribute an already completed game, another gets access to source code & all to port to a new platform. Egosoft still owns the IP & handing out all of its IP to another company is still going to cost more. Either way, this doesn't really matter in the end... the price is what it is. To a Linux only gamer like myself, I've never seen it before. It's new to me. When it was new to Windows, the price was probably the same thing.

They don't exactly pay developers to port the game, at least not beforehand. From their site: "Developers will receive a generous percentage of the sales revenue based on performance and share of the work done on a project once the game is released, for the lifetime of the sales of the game."

Looks nice but I find it a bit boring after some time. Hopefully the third installment is better.

Great game - but the sound shutters. posted by gilboa @ 89.138.152.112 on Jan 23 2007 10:03 PM 55555
I bought the game a month ago. Great game indeed - working nicely at 1920x1200/24" LCD :) (GF6800/2xAMDOP270) The only beef I have against it is the sound system. From time to time, with no apparent reason, the sound shutters for a 3-5 seconds and return to normal. I tried lowering the resolution; starting the game with all services disabled and/or as root (with renice) but it didn't seem to fix the problem. I tried contacting LGP, but got no answer :( - Gilboa

Update to version 1.4.03. Supposedly that fixes your problem.

In the end it was a kernel issue. Solved by a kernel update. The game itself is one of the best I ever played. P.S. X3 is entering the beta stage.

Generally pretty good, but plot is short posted by Anonymous @ 84.45.214.43 on Jan 5 2007 12:34 PM

I bought this a month ago and have just finished the plot. There aren't that many plot missions, though the ones that are there are well put together. I suspect that development of the plot was cut short in order to release.

Other than that, it's a great game.

Zoom keys don't work posted by Anonymous @ 69.25.131.132 on Nov 17 2006 9:41 AM
I bought the game and I love it. The only problem I have is that the NUM + and NUM - keys don't seem to work. The manual states that these are the keys that you zoom with when viewing you ship externally. Nothing happens when I press these keys.

Neat, but one crippled demo posted by Anonymous @ 67.51.128.162 on Jun 22 2006 12:06 PM
I tried the demo. It seems to be a pretty good space sim. I am impressed that someone remembered the radar from Elite, though placing it in a square rather than a circular display is an odd choice, since you get objects popping in and out in the corners.
My biggest gripe, though, is how horribly crippled the demo is.. You get a tiny universe of only four sectors, AND save/load are disabled, AND you're under a time limit before the game stops itself. I think just one of these would have been a fine limitation for a demo. Two would have been reasonable, but all three together is overkill. As far as demos go, this one's a bit crap.
(Says the guy who kept the Thief 2 demo around after buying Thief 2 -- because the demo was not only fantastic, it had some things that weren't in the game itself!)

Once you get into it, the game can easily keep you occupied for several months...
