Yoda Soccer Screenshot Soccer game in the style of Sensible World of Soccer

Yoda Soccer is a project which intends to create a new free game for Windows/Linux/MacOS with the gameplay and the style of the well known Sensible World of Soccer (a.k.a. SWOS). We'll try to add many features missed in Swos.

Some features are lacking (especially a bit of goalkeeper AI), but unperfect as it is, it's very funny to play. I was hooked for an hour until Belgium was able to beat England ! Quite addictive, especially for a SWOS lover. Saddly I can't contribute to the code, and I won't port these 22,000 lines of #!?% language to C/C++.

You should look at OpenWorldSoccer which is the new project by the Yoda Soccer developer(s). It is C++/SDL, and much faster, although still relatively incomplete.

A beautiful game about the beautiful game :-) Still lacking in some respects, especially with regards to the team names and a decent career mode, but it's progressing nicely. The team names don't have to be real (licensing issues abound), but Team A against Team B seems a bit plain...

The menu screens are nice...however when I start a match...the frame rate drops to below 1fps....horribly slow for a simple 2d soccer game. Why is this? My computer plays fully 3d games like enemy territory just fine (1.7 ghz, 768mb ram, radeon mobility 7500 64mb)...why won't it run this at a reasonable speed? I also suggest porting this to some other, more suitable language.

Thatīs strage, the game runs fine on much less powerful computers. Did you experience the same problem with the previous version (0.72) too?

Nowhere near original! posted by bojster @ 80.53.230.66 on Nov 13 2006 11:12 AM 22
It seemed a good idea at first, but only until I started playing. The controls are horrible (I'm not talking about key layout, but about how they work), There are two fire buttons but only one does anything. I can't slide, control the projectile, and what's worst about it, player switching seems totally random and makes the game not-fun to play. And oh yes, the goalkeeper can't catch a ball...

Well, the idea still seems good, but you guys have a long, long way to go before you even reach SWOS level, let alone superceding it. Luckily we have UAE while we wait.

should be rewritten in C/C++ and SDL for better portability.

I absolutely agree with that. C++ code would be faster, more portable and easier to change. I don't see the point in using an uncommon, strange language like 'Blitzmax' anyway..

I agree with you. Unfortunately when I started I used Blitzbasic because it was much easier. Now I would like to make the port, but it requires time.

What about migrating to FreeBasic? It certainly would not be the easiest task, but it would be a lot easier than migrating to C/C++: the syntax is not that different and (as I guess the developers were once at least familiar with QBasic) it should not be difficult to learn. Indeed, I would say that, given the context of a software developed in Blitz, migrating to FreeBasic makes much more sense and could gather more developers.

This game looks pretty cool in the screenshots, but I have no idea how in the hell to play it. I couldn't find any instructions in the tarball. How do I start a match? What is 'friendly' and what is 'DIY'? I figured out how to start a 'friendly' match with cutom teams, but I couldn't control my player.

On the webpage it says: The game is developed using Debian GNU/Linux

Any chance to put a .deb file for easy install?
