Gtk2Hack Screenshot Gtk2 frontend for the popular game nethack.

Gtk2Hack is a nice graphical frontend for the popular rogue-like role playing game nethack using the modern GTK2 toolkit. It was inspired by other window ports like QtHack and Gnomehack.

It aims to provide an improved visual interface while maintaining complete keyboard controllability. It also adds the ability to leave the inventory window up while playing, has nice bars for hitpoint and power display and features a nicer equipment window with the stuff you are currently wearing/wielding.

Excellent interface to nethack. better than the qt. Simple and informative, displaying everything you need to know. Having the inventory and stuff wielded displayed while you hack is soooo good; it helps me remember those scroll of teleport I have when facing a not friendly creature on low levels.
Maybe I'll ascend this time... or maybe not...

One of the worst games I have ever tried posted by dejan @ 81.216.231.195 on Apr 29 2005 2:02 AM 1
Looks like this game has been made by pure NetHack geeks. - It's almost impossible for people who are playing NetHack for the first time to understand what to do in the game. After that i swiched (as suggested by friend) to Falcon's Eye and with just few seconds I, at least managed to move. Game also sets wrong permissions. I installed it in /usr/local and when I started it for the first time it complained about some (no clean explanation what is wrong, so another minus point) wrong permissions, so I had to strace the game to check what is wrong. Apparently it sets all files to be owned by games.games . And only "games" user can write to some files. So when i tried to run the game as some other username it couldn't write to some files. So i chowned everything there to myusername.mygroup and it worked. Graphics is also bad - on big resolutions i needed lens to see what's going on there...

You absolutely have some points here but I disagree with your opinion nevertheless. It is true that the game is aimed at people who wanna play the original nethack as they are used to with a somewhat "nicer" interface. Now for some specific comments:

  • there is quite a good help on the commands available from the menu so it should not be *that* hard to figure out how to move
  • regarding graphics: I am looking for people who can provide me nicer icons and a better looking tileset. Especially the tileset is a hell lot of hard work. There are alternative tilesets but I chose this one because of simplicity, playability on lesser resolutions and completeness. I will add support for tileset-switching and especially include the 32x32 alternative tileset which is quite complete and really nicer looking. I would wish for a completely new and unique 24x24 tileset for gtk2hack but so far nobody has made it. I don't have the time and especially the skill to do it myself.
Perhaps I will add some zoom-levels to help people on high resolutions, too.
  • installation issues/rights: the nethack build system is quite complicated (*multi* platform) and old. So compiling and installing is not trivial. I am working on switching over to autotools with help from autonethack and its author.
However, I do not know how to fix the rights issue because gtk2 disallows running suid/sgid. Anyone able to help here is welcome!
I am also looking for packagers so that users don't have to build gtk2hack themselves!

I had the problems with the file permissions, too (the problem was actually not that the needed files were owned by games:games - you can add a user to as many groups as you like, after all. The actual problem as I have experienced it was actually that the games group didn't get any write access, which would prevent writing the record file and even saving your game, if it would start without the needed permissions.

Somehow the maker of glHack succeeded in making he whole thing work. It's the ONLY graphical frontend besides nethack-qt that works for me. Nethack-qt has an extremely ugly and clunky interface, however. I couldn't stand it for even three minutes.

Can't wait for a debian package to come along ;~)

I especially like the equipment view and the integration of the qt-nethack graphics. This looks like what gnome users have needed for years.

What would be neat is merging this with that opengl nethack thing with gtkglarea. :)
