Kimboot Screenshot A sick and addictive arcade game.

You control a hand holding some very heavy ball on a rope (physics simulation included), and there are a lot of enemies trying to eat your hand. You won't let them! Crush'em all with the ball!

The new version is much improved, graphics and menu wise. The ball and chain could still be implemented better, it's a little too jerky and not as easy to control as it could be. I like the added monsters (drunk, smart, and huge). Not sure if there are more after that, haven't gotten to them if there are. Anyways, keep it up!

After a couple of games, I lost the hand and the ball. Looked like I was fighting with a whip instead.

It leaks memory terribly. Process takes over 250Mb after 5 minutes of play. Python 2.4.4.

Probably you were in Options for too long - I know about that bug and I'm going to fix it. The rest of menu (and game) should be ok.

Nope, I wasn't in the options menu at all. Kimboot process just grows by ~100Mb per game.

Also, it takes 75/50 megabytes VSZ/RSS memory just after start. I expect such game to take no more than 20 Mb, but 50?! It doesn't even have that much data (even uncompressed). Something is definitely wrong...

Please post these bugs on the Kimboot forum (http://kimboot.fora.pl) with your machine's data (operating system, Python and libraries version numbers). Thanks.

It's a real improvement from the first version. Very original too.

Dapper and LibODE posted by Anonymous @ 80.202.117.245 on Mar 14 2007 8:30 AM
I tried to compile PyODE 1.2 on my Debian Dapper, but get unresolved symbols. Libode 0.5-5 is the most recent package available for any Ubuntu version.

froh@tigergut:~/tmp/kimboot-1.00$ python kimboot.py Traceback (most recent call last): File "kimboot.py", line 2, in ? from menu import WholeMenu File "/home/froh/tmp/kimboot-1.00/menu.py", line 5, in ? from main import * File "/home/froh/tmp/kimboot-1.00/main.py", line 3, in ? import os, pygame, ode, time, copy, profile ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ode.so: undefined symbol: dGeomTriMeshGetTriangle

As far as I know, pyODE 1.2.0 is meant to work with ODE 0.7 and 0.8 - so you should download and install one of these versions of ODE (http://www.ode.org).

  Its a Killerspiel posted by Anonymous @ 131.188.24.226 on Jan 27 2007 5:01 AM
Wow, best game idea for 2007 so far! A real Killerspiel :)
Some improvements could be: Mouse-driven menues and and escape-buttom that is not on your mouse. Currently I sometimes click the right mouse botton while in combat which is a little discouraging.

Main python problem is that it's frequently applied to where it's absolutely not suitable for (3D apps, for example). I've hated it for a long time, but now when I've seen Sonata MPD client and some nice small games written in it, I start to like it. Though there are problems with installation. It's not about number of dependencies, as it's job of packet manager to resolve them all. The problem is that python apps come as a single directory, so when I want to install those systemwide or make a package, I have to place whole dir to, say, /usr/local/lib/kimboot. While data belongs to /usr/local/share/kimboot actually, and also I need to make wrapper script in /usr/local/bin that cd's into /usr/local/lib/kimboot and starts a game.

Funny little game.
Gets three stars for originality but could do with some improvements.
